Bulb help!

Hi My husband and I live in Augusta, GA and my mother sent me some bulb plants already started from ProPlant.com for my birthday. They were already sprouting when they came but had no care instructions. since I dont know anything about bulbs I put them in my window with some water and they never bloomed? I put them outside in the sun and now they are dying? My question is, can I plant them in the fall and hope for spring next year and if so how do I keep them until then?
