Mystery plant in front bush beds

Hi all!

I am living in a rental house in Savannah. The yard and beds were quite neglected when we moved in and I have been trying to make things look better around here. I have gone around all the property, and I am seeing a pattern in what plants and weeds are native to this part of Georgia.

This one is a mystery, though, and I haven't found anything like it. It has very hairy stems that are actually quite painful if you grab them. It thrives when the weather is hot and dry enough to wilt everything else. It once had a little white flower.

Looks like a member of the hibiscus family. Do you grow any hardy hibiscus, or perhaps okra?
