Share your experience - Growing Tropical Plants!

So I have tried and failed various attempt to grow Tropical plants here in Georgia. Some has done so well, until the bone chilling winter months :( ... So I have been keeping my plants like Olives, Pomegranate etc confined in pots :( ..

But I know many people are successfully keeping them outside. I even saw a huge Plum tree growing out of somebody's yard (looks very healthy), I know some grows other tropical fruit/flower plants.

What is the trick? (Especially when you plant them on the ground? Do you cover their rootball with some sort of padding? Do you actually put the pot (Open Bottom) under the soil surface? What is the trick? Share your experience please :)
