what plant is this?

we vacation at lake hartwell every year and last year this was covered by butterlies. do any of you know what it is? we were on the GA side of the lake in wattsadler campground. thanks.

That is Buttonbush, Cephalanthus occidentalis. A native shrub that thrives on wetland edges. A favorite of butterflies and apparently a source of round buttons (the dried seedpods) for early settlers.

thank you. wow-how interesting i didnt know how it got the name-cool. fun fact to tell the kids when we go again next month.
