Plant suggestions: large leaves, full sun

I am looking for a perennial to plant between two varieties of ornamental grasses (Panicum virgatum 'Haense Hermes' and prairie dropseed), in a spot that gets a brutal amount of afternoon sun (hence the use of native ornamental grasses!). I would love to get your thoughts.

Requirements:

full sun

large leaves

2-3' tall, 2' wide

drought-tolerant

These would also be nice, if possible:

native

variegated or multicolored foliage (preferably with some red)

evergreen

I have some Stokes' asters in that spot right now, but they are not chunky enough for me. I love the look of Heuchera and Heucherella, but I doubt they could take that amount of sun. What about dwarf Cannas? Anyone tried those? I would think they get too wide for the space.

Ideally, I would want another ornamental grass, but none of them have large leaves.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.
