mayland

There is a native plant sale on Saturday Sept 20 from 8-4 at Fernbank Science Center (the one oppostite the elementary school, not the Natural History museum).

The webpage has a link to the plant list.

I went to the Spring sale in April and it was great -- very busy and lots sold by the time I got there at 10am. This time I'll try to be there at 8am!

Here is a link that might be useful: plant sale

Pretty cool list of plants. I did not know about that event. I wonder which plants get scarce by the afternoon?

I can't read the file with the plant list. Any one else have trouble? It says "the file is damaged and cannot be repaired".

Esh, I'll email the PDF of the plant list to you.

David, I remember that many of the perennials were sold out by the time I arrived at the spring sale (I got there around 10ish). They had a lot of shrubs/trees left but had defintely sold out of some, but I can't remember which ones, sorry. We bought 2 rhodies (they had lots of those left) and a clethra. This year I want to buy several wax myrtles to plant a screen with, so I'm going to try to get there early.

Here is the plant list copied over, in case anyone can't access the file (unfortunately they only use the common names, which confuses me no end!)...

The Southern River Fern has many common names. It is also known as:
    River Fern
    Widespread Maiden Fern
    Southern Shield Fern
    Southern Maiden Fern
    Southern Wood Fern
    Kunth's Maiden Fern
It is Thelypteris kunthii(Syn. Thelypteris normalis) and is more commonly referred to as Widespread Maiden Fern and that name fits it's habit perfectly, under the right growing conditions!
It is a common roadside Fern in the Southern part of GA, but can also be found in scattered locations in the Piedmont.
Southern River Fern is a rather obscure common name for this Fern.
I'm somewhat surprised to find anyone using it.

Esh, thank you for the Latin names, that is really helpful! I might buy a Cephalanthus occidentalis (Buttonbush) as well, there is one outside my kids' daycare center and it has fantastic flowers in spring, and now.

GGG, are you not planting yet b/c its too hot, or b/c you are still fixing your yard after the tornado? I know you said you had to do some extensive repairs, I hope everything has gone well. Were there any areas of your yard that were undamaged or do you have to plant everything new?

Fernbank has updated the list for the plant sale, its a little shorter now, so there must be some things that they are not stocking. Here is the new list:

    Impressive list!
Guess I'll pass, this time around. There are a few items of interest, but water, or lack thereof, is of prime concern to me right now. Rainbarrels are almost empty and no prospects for refilling them anytime soon!
Will not be the first time that I've experienced ZERO rainfall during the entire month of September.

I see in today's paper that Georgia Perimeter College is having their FERN MADNESS sale on the same day. I have gone to that before and they have a nice selection of ferns and other native plants. It is fun to stroll around the gardens as well.

One of the ferns recommended in the article is Northern Maidenhair - despite the name, it is native to this area as well. It's a wonderful fern and I've never found it to be picky.
