Can someone ID this snake for me?

This snake was found in front of my house in Atlanta, GA on 9/22/2008. It appeared to be about 12 inches long, maybe a few inches longer. I was hoping to find out exactly what it is. Kinda scary as my 3 year older daughter stepped right over it (but fortunately not on it) before I saw it. Fortunately it was "sleeping" until I nudged it, then it took a defensive posture for a minute then it slithered off under the front porch.

Of course the main thing I want to know is if it's dangerous and if so what is the best course of action to keep my daughter safe.

Thanks!

truly, it's not the best picture, but it looks like a Gray Rat Snake (elaphe obsoleta spiloides). not poisonous. doesn't really have the head shape to be a poisonous snake, and this is definitely the kind of predator i would want hanging out around my house.
