County Compost - Compact

Yesterday, I picked up some free compost at the Chamblee transfer station in DeKalb County. Wow, was it compact. I suspect it was from all the rain that we recently experienced. It was the first time I left before I filled all my containers.

I am really tempted to buy the Awesome Augur to help loosen the compost on my next trip. If you own one of these tools, I suggest you bring it along when you pick up free compost.

BTW, who has the authority to create a FAQ? It would be useful to have a FAQ, "Where can I get free compost in Georgia?"

Here is a link that might be useful: DeKalb County Transfer Stations (free compost for DeKalb County residents)

I'm not a TV watcher, so googled "Awesome Auger". Lots of complaints. Hidden charges also mentioned. Plus it's designed to use with electric drill (I think), so wouldn't be usable at the compost station.

Love your idea for a FAQ!

I use one to plant my bulbs in hard ground with a (good) battery powered drill. I am sure it would work fine in compost.

Rosie, Thanks for the warning. I decided to buy it on eBay. I don't need the "free" weed augur or drill.

Got more county compost today. Compost was compact again. The awesome auger worked just fine. It's a shame that there are so many complaints about hidden charges, since the product almost works as advertised (It says no bending, which is only true for shorter people).

I just bring a pitchfork and find that usually works well enough. That and two little kids who can climb up a bit and knock some down loose for me. They're my awesome whirling dervish augers!
