Everything is black under trees?

I have several trees which I'm told are Hackberry trees by several folks, looks correct based on photos online, but I haven't confirmed with an arborist.

Anyway, the weird part - for every Hackberry tree on my property, all plants under them have black leaves. Even the lower branches of the actual tree have black leaves. Doesn't matter what kind of plants - honeysuckle shrubs, ligustrum, whatever. Doesn't seem to affect them, but it's still really weird to me, and less than desirable.

Anyone else have an experience like this? I guess I could call an arborist out to check the trees, but ... it's several trees, and I can't help but think this is a common issue because it affects all trees of this type on my property - even those which are hundreds of feet apart on our lot, isolated from all others.
