flood plain gardeing

Hello all--I have a challenge that I'd love some help with. I have a gardening project in a yard that backs onto the Nancy Creek flood plain. I'd like to ease the switch between lawn and forest, the catch being that unless we get lots of rain (ie, hurricanes), that area is very dry. Its oriented almost directly west, so only the area under the trees gets any shade, and that area gets basically complete shade. That's the back. On one side, the yard slopes steeply and is edged by the neighbors' fence, which means when we do get hurricanes, it floods, and it stays very dry the rest of the time. Again, its full sun till you hit the trees. I've been turning the red GA clay into growable soil, but I'd love some suggestions on what to plant!
