Central Ohio Plant Swap & Potluck - Sat. May 17, 2008

Hello fellow gardeners!
It's that time again! My name is Beverly - (aka Storygardener) My good friend and gardening buddy, Mimi, (aka Princess Mimi)and I have again reserved a covered shelter at a park in Hilliard, Oh (northwest suburb of Columbus, Ohio) for a plant swap and pot luck on Saturday, May 17, 2008.
MARK YOUR CALENDAR & TELL YOUR FRIENDS
Here is the basic information:
Date: Saturday, May 17, 2008
Time: 10:00 am
Place: Shelter #5, Hilliard Municipal Park, Hilliard, Ohio. The park is on Veterans Memorial Dr.
TRADING MATERIALS: plants, well rooted cuttings potted up, bulbs, shrubs, happy seedlings, garden ornaments,& bundled garden magazines, extra gardening implements, etc.
(PLEASE MARK ALL PLANT MATERIALS WITH THE PLANT NAME AND CARE (shade, sun, etc) THEY REQUIRE!!! Also, mark any plants as invaisive or poisonous, if known)
POT LUCK: Please bring a dish to pass with serving untensil & your own beverage We will provide plates, plastic silverware, napkins & cup. It's a good idea to mark your serving spoons etc. with your name. I can tell you...gardeners are WONDERFUL cooks!!
DOOR PRIZES: If anyone wants to donate something for a door prize, please feel free. Over the years we have had many really neat prizes!! Lots of fun.
This should be a wonderful chance to share your passion for gardening, meet other avid and learning gardeners, have a festive and delicious meal, acquire some new plants & share your extra's. Please come with a happy and sharing heart. Bring pictures of your gardens, flowers, etc. - if you like!
This is the plan for the day:
10:00 -12:00 - people arrive, sign-in with your name and number of plants, get name tag, put plants in viewing/swap area, put dish to pass away, visit with other gardeners & start viewing plants.
Noon - have lunch
After lunch - door prize(s) awarded
1:00 - swap begins
After swap - more visiting, pack up & goodbyes.
This plant swap is free...but, if anyone wants to donate a dollar that day to help defray the cost of the shelter (now $50, paper products, etc) - we won't argue with you!
We've been to many swaps we really like this swapping style - a modified ROUND ROBIN.
Round One - pick one plant
Next Round - pick one plant
Next Round - pick two plants
Next Round - pick three plants
And so on, and so on....
This way everyone gets a chance to get some of the plants they really have on eye on. This works well and people have been very pleased in the past. **Everyone should be able to take home as many plants as they bring. **
Some tips for the day would include bringing a folding chair or blanket for sitting (sometimes needed), a box or container labeled with your name to put your new plants in after swapping & bring and mark your serving utensils for your dish to pass. If you have room in the car...bring an extra table, just in case.
Hilliard Municipal Park can be found by getting into Columbus, then go to the outerbelt, I-270 & go west, and getting off at Cemetery Road Exit. Go west again (towards Hilliard) on Cemetery Rd. Stay on Cemetery Road about 2 miles until right past Main Street (a traffic light). At this point you still go straight because Cemetery Road joins with Scioto Darby Road. Go about .4 mile down road until you get to Veterans Memorial Drive which is on the left.
Veterans Memorial Drive/Hilliard Municipal Park is off of Scioto Darby road on the left side of the road - across from Hilliard Heritage Middle School. (NOT hilliard Memorial Middle school - that, you'll see first.) Another landmark is that Veterans Memorial Dr. is where you see the Urgent Care & Sunshine Academy. Shelter #5 is only about 1/10 mile from the park entrance. You stay directly on the park's main road and go .1 mile and turn right (just past all the flag poles). You'll turn right again quickly into a parking lot directly in front of shelter #5. The shelter just left of the children's playyard.
We hope you can make it.
PLEASE EMAIL with RSVP so we can get a head count. (This helps us know how many plates, cups, etc. to bring)
This should be a FUN, informal day to share our love of gardening! We are contacting some of our gardening friends & alerting the Gardeweb.com people & the local garden club. Hopefully we'll have a good crowd. You should bring a gardening friend, too!
Please email with any questions.
HOPE YOU CAN MAKE IT TO THE SWAP!
Good gardening...
...Beverly & Mimi

Hi! Beverly, It was nice to talk to you yesterday. It looks like I will be first to reply, and a big YES, we will be there. It is always nice to look forward to the exchange in the spring. We should have enough to bring if the weather co-operates. We have had a lot of snow to cover those babies and keep them warm. Ron wanted me to remind you about Friday evening dinner. It would not be the exchange if we did not go over for our favorite. Talk to you later. Thanks. Betty |

| Hi Beverly! My old email doesn't work anymore so if you've emailed me already it might bounce back to you. I'm Jeanne 6OH at yahoo dot com, minus the spaces. Mom moved in just a couple of houses down from me so all her information needs changed as well. I'll let her know about the swap when she comes over for dinner today, I'm sure she'll be as eager to attend as I am! And thanks so much for starting the thread, I may not be a frequent commenter but I really enjoy reading about what everyone's up to. See you all soon! Jeanne |

| I'm in and I think I will make either hash brown casserole or a breakfast casserole. That way I can assemble it the night before. The hash brown casserole is incredibly rich, so it's a once a year type thing. We'll see. Oh yes...plants? I have a winter sowing project that I hope will work out and will enable me to hand out plants to anyone who wants one. Details later. Join us over on winter sowing and get some project launched right now, for spring babies! Thanks Beverly and Mimi! You guys are the best! |

Beverly, Mimi, Hostalavista here!!! there will be 4 of us again this year. Were like everyone else, we can't wait. I can't tell you how much I'm so glad to be a part of this. Last year my cousin and his wife came to the fall one, he said 'I can't believe this, it's like stealing plants. Do you realize how much this would cost you???' I don't think they knew how nice and giving gardeners are! Not only with plants but the knowledge too. Can't wait to see you all. I will try to get intouch with Granny, I believe she is having computer problems. Any requests? I believe I will have Mimosa trees. Don't know what else... Lets get the requests going... I would like some unusual tomatoes. I'm so excited... Hostalavista Babee!! linda |

| YEAHHHHHHHH!!!! I can't wait. I have already started to get stuff ready! I have a new job and my boss and coworker are avid gardeners. I am trying to "sucker" them in to coming. Oh I am sooo excited. I have limited email access now that I am not at my old work but. I will bribe my sister and mum for computer use to keep up with this. Will have a detailed list of stuff come closer to spring. Gads this is the best surprise I received this year! |
RE: Central Ohio Plant Swap & Potluck - Sat. May 17, 2008

SEE!! here come the requests, Beverly thanks for remembering I wanted lavender plants, I remembered after I had already writtne my follow up. Stormy Barbie, I have lots of Ajuga, I'll get some dug for you. I'd like a few of those heirloom tomatoes, I think I mentioned tomatoes. Got to change my email too, I don't have the same one and I can hardly get used to this one. Hi Betty Hagey, nice to see you on here too, hostalavista |
RE: Central Ohio Plant Swap & Potluck - Sat. May 17, 2008

Hi! Hostalavista, it is nice to see your name on the list that are coming. We are coming and hope we have a better day of it than we had going home last spring. We were about 70 miles from home when a deer ran into the left side front door. It broke the window and rear view mirror, and messed up the door. Thank goodness for OnStar. The policeman who came by to help lived only a half mile up the road. He said, that that stretch of the road was noted for deer running across. In fact there were houses on each side of the road which was hard to believe they would run through there. Not sure what we are bringing, but we are going to divide some hostas we know at this time. Will let you know in case you want to do a trade. We have gotten into daylilies now because we have run out of shade. Hope everything is going well with you. See you in May. Betty |

| WOW! Betty and Ron I am so glad that you are both alright! Growing up in Pennsylvania I have seen and heard about horrible accidents involving deer. Glad to hear that you will be coming to see us! (and swap, eat and visit!) Linda, Mouse, Barbi, Stephanie, Karen, Diggerb, Jeanne and all the rest of my friends...the same goes for you! I hope all of our other friends make it too. I should be looking tan and relaxed on swap day. (Well, at least tanned!) We will be returning from a southern vacation just days before the swap. I'll have to get busy before we leave to have all my plants ready. Perhaps I could have a kindly neighbor water for me while we are gone. Hmmmmmm.....wonder if I know anyone like that? (Tee! Hee!) Getting excited! ~~Mimi |
RE: Central Ohio Plant Swap & Potluck - Sat. May 17, 2008

| Hi Kin2mice....so glad you're coming to the swap. Bring all the friends you like. It's like a big party with food and trading plants! Hostalavista..I'll set aside a lavendar (munstead) for you. Mimi - who could that neighbor be???? Think spring....Beverly |
RE: Central Ohio Plant Swap & Potluck - Sat. May 17, 2008

| This is going to be so fun. Glad the deer didn't damage you guys. Cars can be replaced but plant friends can't. I also will have some ajuga if anyone will want it. I am going to be looking for violets and woodlands and whatever else strikes my fancy. (heaven knows I can't pass up an orphan plant.)Some little critter went and dug up my labradore violet I got from those nice folks up in Orrville and my little bi coloured one that I "snitched" from my aunts neigbors yard got picked over by birds ( I dislike starlings!) so I don't know it it will survive the winter. I might have some veggies this year. Eggplants and peppers and maybe leeks depending on how many germinate for my dads garden. Anyway see you all there! I'll be there with bells on and what ever I can dig up. I am thinking brownie cake again or maybe a nice jello slime dessert. (tastes like a dream looks like pink slime with marshmellows) I can't make anything normal in the kitchen. Just happy accidents! :) |
RE: Central Ohio Plant Swap & Potluck - Sat. May 17, 2008

| happy accidents in the kitchen usually taste the best! esp if it's covered with chocolate!!! |

| HI, All! Just remembered to check. Haven't been on in a while. James, the kids, Mom, and I should be there. Haven't had time to check with anyone yet. You won't believe the increase in Naomi's vocabulary since fall. Hostalavista, I sure hope you can get in touch with Granny. I have been trying but all I had was her email and nothing would go through. I've been worried. Hey Mouse, do you still have some hens and chicks? I think my Mom's friend might still be interested. Anyone else looking for something in particular. I know James has started a few things but don't know what. Will check with him tonight. May try and find the recipe I have for a dip that tastes like chocolate chip cookie dough or maybe some curried rice or noodles. Better get a few things done while Naomi is busy and Noah is at school. |

Michelle, glad to hear you and the family will be there. I told Collin that Naomi and Noah would be there. He was very excited. He mentioned something about a "kids only" swap. I can just see the three of them swapping hostas! We'll see what he dreams up! Sometimes he can come up with some interesting ideas, to say the least! Stephanie |

| Question...anybody every heard or seen anything with the Columbus Monthly article that they were taking pictures for at the swap last fall? |
RE: Central Ohio Plant Swap & Potluck - Sat. May 17, 2008
| | |
| Hi Michelle! The article you're referring to should be published in April providing nothing tops it and pushes it off the docket. Bev and I are wondering how it will impact our attendance. We always say, "the more the merrier" so we'll see! I hope that we don't get mobbed! We have a two hour delay today. Yuck! Think SPRING! ~~Mimi |

| Bakemom...I am so glad you'll be able to do the race for the cure and swap again. It wouldn't be the same without you! Hi Michelle! - glad that you and the gang will be at the swap again. It's fun watching all these children grow up! We'll see if the swap gets an article in Columbus Monthly. I'll let you all know. Think spring, everyone. Beverly |
RE: Central Ohio Plant Swap & Potluck - Sat. May 17, 2008

| Oh, Stephanie, I forgot the other day...I will be sure that Noah and Naomi bring something special to swap with Collin. Maybe we can start a section for a "Kids only" swap. |
RE: Central Ohio Plant Swap & Potluck - Sat. May 17, 2008

| Hi Gang! Sorry I'm so slow in getting around to saying I'm in for the spring swap. I don't know about you folks, but I have spring fever already. These warm days are making me think gardening. See you soon! Trish |
RE: Central Ohio Plant Swap & Potluck - Sat. May 17, 2008
| | |
| does that special kids swap section mean that we can swap kids? wouldn't that be a hoot-- then swap them back at the fall swap!! there were days when my two were little i'd have swapped them for a hosta-- or something. i'm going to try some winter sowing this year. and maybe i'll have some plants to trade. i've been working over my beds and last summer was the pits for me. so mostly i have swamp milk weed, plain old daylillies, chaemeleon plant, and buttered popcorn buttercups-- not much to boast about-- but they are all survivors diggerb |
RE: Central Ohio Plant Swap & Potluck - Sat. May 17, 2008

xaroleht - yep gots lots of hens and chicks. Mum is always trying to find good homes for them. I tried eating them once or twice.Just remind me again closer to the date and I 'll bring a bag or two. they are edible, but I just never got the taste for them. maybe if I cover them in enough chocolate!. strmy - just for you I will try and put chocolate on the pink slime. maybe pink slime with chocolate swirls will work! I'll work on getting some door prizes maybe not photos something different .... hmmmm... ps. if anyone has any plastic water bottles the bottoms make great seed/transplant starters. I have to drink alot of good old h2o (work doest have the best faucet stuff and home is just gross) so the bottles kept piling up till I found a good use for them. see you there! |
RE: Central Ohio Plant Swap & Potluck - Sat. May 17, 2008

| Has anyone heard from Granny57 aka Margie lately? I tried to email her and it got bounced back. Hey, Mouse! I use 2 liter bottles for winter sowing and just the bottoms for pots. My gallon milk jugs do double duty too! Great for swap pots. I just write directly on the plastic with an "Industrial" Sharpie. I'll be bringing what ever my latest "Garden Gems" project is for a door prize. Right now I'm making suncatchers. We'll see if they sell! If not there will be LOTS of doorprizes! ~~Mimi |
RE: Central Ohio Plant Swap & Potluck - Sat. May 17, 2008

| First thanks to Mouse for sharing this site with me. Secondly, My RSVP. I am really looking forward to meeting other gardeners. Can I bring my Dad? He is a wonderful gardener and new to Central Ohio. He would love this. |

| twinmommy - the more the merrier! All who love plants are welcome to come. I am planning on bringing my mum, at least two - three coworkers and if I can steal him for the day, my nephew. to all - if anyone uses egg cartons for seed starting or crafts I have about 16-20 of them and would be more then happy to bring them to the swap or drop them off someplace. I have the carboard and styrafoam ones and 1 2.5doz one.My friend who raises chickens does't need them anymore and I have so many already with seeds starting I am starting to dream of them! Just give me a email. |
RE: Central Ohio Plant Swap & Potluck - Sat. May 17, 2008

Think spring.....Beverly Kin2mice...it's fun to dream :) |
RE: Central Ohio Plant Swap & Potluck - Sat. May 17, 2008

| I just invited some more folks to the swap. I hope that they come! We have been passing around the flu here so I haven't even winter sowed the first thing yet. I have decided on some of what I'll be bringing for door prizes. I've been teaching Isaac to throw pots and I have several flower pots and saucers that I made. I also have LOTS of dangler/suncatchers that I made. If they don't sell I'll be bringing those too! I'm done with the snow. It can be spring now! ~~Mimi |
RE: Central Ohio Plant Swap & Potluck - Sat. May 17, 2008

| Ok everyone Mimi has me convinced I can do this. I am a newbie to growing plants, so I may not have lots to offer this year, but I think it sounds like a great time. And it's the week before my birthday so what better time to make new friends. Count me in +1. Now to figure out something good to eat I can bring along with my little plants. |

| Yay!!!! Orca is coming! Welcome to the party!!! Glad you are taking the plunge. We always have a good time and I'm sure you will too. We have LOTS of may birthdays among us and we'll all be celebrating wither our b'day is near or not. Can't wait to see you all! ~~Mimi |

Hi, I have been away from the Garden Web for much, much too long. I was so hoping to see a "local" swap, that I wouldn't find too late! I have about 4 friends I am going to try to persuade to come, but I am a little concerned about not having very much to trade..... We have been discussing starting seeds, and reading over your entries, I guess we'd better get started. I'm so excited..... |
RE: Central Ohio Plant Swap & Potluck - Sat. May 17, 2008

| Glad to have you Kelly! Folks bring all kinds of things to the swap that are not plants. We have one gal that brings blown glass, I've seen head boards, real trellises, planters, hypertufa, stacks of pots, tools, edging, sprinklers, bundles of gardening magazines, gardening books, garden ornaments, you name it! I bet if you clean out your garage/garden shed you'll find lots of stuff you have not used for a while that someone else would like. Let us know how many of your friends will be coming. The more the merrier! ~~Mimi |

Hi Guys, Spring Swap sounds like so much fun! I wish I could come but we are planning on being out of state again this year. But I will be there in the Fall again. I hope to see everyone then. We had so much fun last fall and knowing we would not be here in the spring when this swap was going on we decided to have our own swap at a later date. If anyone is close enough to join us you are welcome. Beverly, you and Mimi do such a wonderful job with this swap. I have enjoy meeting everyone and spending a day with people and putting faces to names. Thank you for making me feel so welcome the last too falls. Twila |

| Hi everyone! I'm a gardener in Clintonville and I'm new to this forum. I'd like to attend the plant swap. This will be my first full year with a garden of my own, and I'm probably going overboard with the seed orders. If I succeed in getting my little seeds to grow, I should have a lot of seedlings on my hands by May--mostly heirloom tomatoes, but also a little bit of herbage and miscellaneous. Dawn |

| Count me in! I don't know what I'll have to swap but I'm sure I can dig up something! :) I can't wait to see everyone, trade plants and eat until I bust! At the risk of getting flamed by parents, I just have to ask. Are there going to be any rules regarding who can "pick" plants? I think I remember a discussion about this last year but there's been an increasing trend for adults to have their children pick plants during the rounds, especially during the earlier rounds when competition is fierce for the plants we are lusting after the most and when you have to make a decision what to make your first choice. Don't get me wrong. I love the little tykes and love having them come along to the picnic. I'm a Mom myself but I don't think it is really a fair strategy to the actual gardeners who attend for people to send their kids out to snatch plants. I hope I don't get to many flame posts for saying this but I felt it had to be said. :) |
RE: Central Ohio Plant Swap & Potluck - Sat. May 17, 2008
| | |
| Glad you'll be there Gardengirl! Beverly and I will repeat. We are not the plant police. We encourage everyone to treat others in the way they would like to be treated. One year someone took a hostess gift out of my box. Last year, just after we got done giving out doorprizes, there was a woman standing near the day lilies for the first round. I asked what she was wanting. Turns out that she wanted the same plant that I did and there was only one. I explained that I help put on the swap and was helping with the prizes. She told me, "I was here first so that's the breaks!" When she told me she was gaurding my second choice for her friend I informed her that you need to be there to get your own plants. Then I shrugged it off. I just don't figure that there's a plant out there worth loosing my serenity about. There's not a swap worth becoming a referee for either. I settle enough disputes at home. If the swap gets to be too much hassle and isn't fun anymore I'll stop doing it. Now to address your concern. My rule for my kids (who have only been there once) is, if you pick it you plant it. Only Ben was interested enough to pick anything. I limited him to five plants. Of course I "gave" him five of the ones I brought for trading. We ask folks to come with a generous sharing heart. Let's hope everyone remembers the golden rule. Now let's hope all of this snow melts in time! ~~Mimi |
RE: Central Ohio Plant Swap & Potluck - Sat. May 17, 2008
| | |
| Mimi, you are so right. People will do what they want and I certainly don't let it ruin my fun. These days I go more for the people and the food than the plants and take way more than I bring home. I just though I'd put this out there because I heard some grumbling about this last year and did see it in action. That's a good rule you have for your little ones! Mine is only 11 months old so it will be a long time before she's planting. I'm more interested in teaching her how to pull weeds anyway. ;) |
RE: Central Ohio Plant Swap & Potluck - Sat. May 17, 2008

| Hi Beverly and Mimi and all you wonderful plant swappers! I have been bummed out about not being able to attend the past couple years but I am hoping to come to the swap this year with Granny57(Margie) if all goes well with my schedule. I dont know if I will have much to swap or not as I have moved but I am going to retrieve many of my plants as soon as the weather breaks so we shall see. I had hoped to visit Granny today to see how she is feeling as she fell and broke her wrist not long ago and also to see if I could get her up and running on her computer again. I have been able to help her a couple times in the past but she does have some real connectivity issues due to the specific rural area that she lives in. Unfortunately this dern blizzard has prevented me from seeing her today as she is still totally snowed in on her farm. The other day she and I were on the phone and I was reading her all the posts on here and she was so touched to hear that people were asking about her and she was not forgotten. This garden swap club means the world to her. Granny sends her love to everyone and says to tell you all that she is going crazy not being able to join in on the pre swap posting fun and misses everyone so very much! I have heard about this before and am excited to be able to come this year. I will probably bring a guest. I am somewhat new to all this - my learning process in gradual. All plants are great, but I am very interested in learning about ohio native plants etc and adding as many as I can to my yard. Very open to advice! See you there. -Toni |

| I'm not trying to "flame" you gardengirl. Noah has his own section of the yard. The plants he picks go in his garden. The chair Naomi got first round one year she sits in. If there is something you really want let others know. I'm sure most of us parents would back off if there is a problem. I usually go for the glass first if it is there. And most swappers I have been around during the first round are glad to disscuss what each is looking at so there aren't problems. We usually bring over 100 plants and don't even take what we bring with all of us picking. Also if there is something you are really looking for post it and do a private trade. If I have it and can spare some I will be happy to do a side swap. Some of us Moms have even been talking about a special kids swap. I bring my kids because they like gardening and picking plants of their own. I have missed out on many plants I really wanted over the many years I have been attending and have had people take plants that I really wanted out of my pile after I had picked them. It happens you move on. |

hey guys (and gals) just wanted ya'll to know that I saw at least two of my el cheapo fish swimming along in the pond the other day (at least until the snow covered the pond, now I can't even find the pond!)I am soooo psycid!!! We all survived and I even got pics of my first Hellborne bloom before the snow got too deep. As far as not getting first pick caus of kids (now watch the flames turn on since I don't have any!) I did hear some grumbling last year and sometimes have felt cheated myself... however... I have also found that some of the stuff I did not get I could just go up and ask for a cutting or a division or a swap for something else. Got a great lemon bell clementis that way. Turns out I had snagged something that person really wanted so we swapped again. If someone is going to be mean about it I just move on with a smile and find something else I can cram into my already overflowing garden. It is "just" a plant... I can find it someplace else or I can in my boyfriends words " if you want it that bad save up the money and buy it!" I think to my self that they had might have a good reason to be mean about it, they may not beable to save the money to buy it.. it may remind them of a lost loved one or heaven forbid they are just mean and greedy plant people. (I have never met one but I am sure they might be there) Okay will get off soap box. Me and my nephew will be there as well as a few others. Alex can count and is generous but if he messes up I am sure we can make amends by helping to pick up trash as he is good at that or he can wait and take the orphans (he is only three and though smart just wants something pretty he can grow)Besides there wont be any more gardeners if we don't let kids in when they are small enough to warp and mold. heh heh heh heh heh heh heh (evil laugh!) love ya all! |

Good thought Mouse about growning future gardeners and molding them young. Great news about your fish, hope they continue to winter over. I'm sorry if I have ever offended anyone by letting my kids pick plants. James and I were talking and if we sometimes suggest a plant it may be that we are trying to teach them which plants will work in our yard. We have tried to let Noah pick his own plants but sometimes they need guidance. |

Well, as a mom, I guess I have to weigh in as well. I understand yoru concerns, gardengirl. I do have to say though that the first year we brought our son, he was adamant about a fern. It was a common, garden variety fern, but he sat by that darn thing for a good half an a hour (which, for a three year old, is a long time), waiting for the swap to start. So, it's not always the exotic plants they're after. You can just never tell what will strike their fancy! And, he, like Noah and Naomi, has his "own" plants in our garden. He's very proud of that fern and now searches out others. If we bring a Quilting Bee Hosta start, it will be only with his permission, as he's claimed that as "his hosta." I think we'd also have a better chance of getting him away from any plant that someone is really dying for if that person tells us how much they want that plant. Mom and dad saying "no, you can't have that plant" doesn't hold as much weight as saying "That nice lady/ man over there really wants that plant. Remember how much you wanted that fern? Let's be considerate of others." So, if there's something you want, don't be afraid to say so. The worst that happens is someone says no. In my experience with the swappers, however, everyone has been very accomodating. When I don't get what I want, I trade again there or make that person promise to bring back a start for the next swap. I like to encourage him to garden. I get great pleasure watching him devour peas off the vine, seeing his eyes grow wide when he sees what's blooming, and caring for all his plants. I hate to tell you this, but there's another little gardener in our family as well, although we haven't decided whether she's coming this year or not yet. Thank you for raising the issue though, I'll certainly keep my eye out to make sure I do what I can to stop my son from taking plants that others really want. Steph |

Different subject: my housemate was cleaning out his basement dungeon (room) and found two large totes of pots and pans. These are not good for cooking but many have cool wooden handles and are big enough to make neat planters. If people want them please let me know and I will bring them to the swap. I don't have room to use them in my garden and I don't want to lug them to the swap if no one wants them. ALSO - Does anyone want some heavy glass rectangular relish trays (about 10 of them) they would make great edging as they are about the size of a brick but flat and clear glass. Thanks! |

| Hi all, I didn't make the swap last year and won't be able to make it again this year, but I have to put in my two cents, for what it is worth on the children issue. I have read every post just to keep in touch with you all and I couldn't resist responding. If you could just take a minute and watch the excitment of a child and see what they see through his/her eyes as they pick their very own plant to put in the garden and watch them plant and watch it grow, it you would get a whole new perspective on the joy of gardening. Learn from them. Let them pick a plant, think how great you feel when you get a plant that you really wanted. Off my soapbox now, sorry I have to miss this great event again this year. JoAnn |

| Mouse, please bring the pots and relish trays. They can always be put in the non plant area. I can think of at least one "garden craft" that the glass may be used for...how about you MiMi? If nothing else the pots can be used to put plants in for the next swap or to put a split in of something someone else wants. |

Granny I am so glad you are back. I have been worried about you. I couldn't figure out what had happened when my emails kept coming back. Then I posted a searching for...question on gardenweb looking for you. Glad to hear you will be at the swap. James has tomatoes started and has been doing research on historic varieties of everything since we are mainly in charge of the gardens at a Schoenbrunn village(1770's) this year. We have been getting seeds in from different people in Seed savers already as well. Everyone have a blessed Easter. |

| HAPPY ST. PATRICKS DAY!!! To all the Irish and those who deep down wish you were (translate - everyone else LOL) may I wish you the best of this good green day! May all of your gardens be as green as the hills of dear old Erin. GRANNYYYYYYYY!!! YEAH you are back! I am glad of it. I can't wait to see you again! Get better soon! Xaroleht - have you heard of a seed company called Territorial? They have some really cool old fashioned/native seed you might be interested in. I have ordered from them and the germination has been great and I can't wait to see what kind of crop dad will get this year! |
RE: Central Ohio Plant Swap & Potluck - Sat. May 17, 2008

| Thanks Mouse. I think James has looked into them. There are several. Heirloom seeds out of Elizabeth, PA and the Heirloom seed project out of Lancaster, PA are two I can think of. You can also get seeds through the USDA seed bank and we get alot through Seed Savers. The research has been through different books and the author William Woys Weaver(gardening and good cookbooks too). James even found some books whose entirety was online and you could download them. At least there is no shortage of sources. We even found reference to something that might be the answer to a entry in Ziesberger's diarys from his days at Schoenbrunn which we have been looking for for a couple of years. It's a good thing gardeners are a sharing bunch. |

| Yes, Granny, we DO love you that much!!! I already had to dig my first plant! During the heavy rain we had I was getting some pooling next to the foundation. It was caused by the iris that had mounded up as it grew. I dug a channel to drain it and Voila! First plant dug! Do I get a prize? Can't wait until I can get out and actually dig up stuff for real! It's spring break for my kids so no yard work for me. We are painting Isaac's room so of course he wants custom window blinds. I'll be sewing up blind that you open with a zipper! His idea. Can't wait until it's done! It should be pretty cool! See y'all soon!!!!! ~~Mimi |

By the way...our plant swap did get an article in Columbus Monthly. My aunt called me and read it to me. I'll be running out to get a copy asap. Sounds like the writer got "flavor" of our swap. What fun! Think spring....Beverly |

Hi! Beverly & Mimi, We are back home and it is cold. We have tornadoes down south and snow in MI. What is this weather doing to us? It is nice to be home. We are ready for the exchange and some fun. Granny 57 - We really don't have a lot of extra room, so there might not be to many new hostas this year. They are not coming up as yet. We do have a few daylilies and spring bulbs coming up. We do have some dates for MSU gardens sales. They usually have some new items. Van Attas have there spring open house on the third weekend of April. It is always nice to see what is new. Not sure what we will have to bring in May. Beverly when are you coming to MI? Was Alex home to Grandma & Grandpa's? Adam was at our house and we had so much fun with him. He slept all the way home, as he was a tired little boy when they left. Think spring! Betty |

| Hi Betty...SO glad you are Ron are home safe and sound! I can't wait to see you both. Yes, we will be coming to Michigan in a couple of weeks - I"ll give you a call beforehand. Folks - I've seen the article in Columbus Monthly about our swap. WOW - Teresa did a terrific job of getting the "flavor" of what we do and all the fun, sharing and good times we have. She gave great ideas about folks doing their own swaps too. If you have a chance - pick one up -or check out the copy at the library. And - The first page is a full page wonderful picture of Michelle and Noah looking at an aloe plant. It's great. We'll send you a copy, Michelle. I am getting so darn excited. I want spring here soon. Take care........Beverly |

Thanks Mimi!! Storygardener, Can you get a copy of the paper for those of us who don't live in the area?I will be more then happy to pay for it.But I wouldn't want to put you out or be a burden. It would just be a nice momento. My Sedums are coming up that I have wintered over in pots from last year.I think I will be bringing some of them. They may be small but nice and healthy. I will also be bringing some Lamiums and I have a TON of the Ajuga that I will be more then HAPPY to bring for you Barbie((Strmywthr3)). From the looks of it you may have your hands full if everyone brings what they've offered. Because it's the spring swap,I'm considering bringing some annuals. Hagey, My Hostas aren't coming up yet either, I will just be Honored to see you, With or with out Hostas!! Margie((Granny57)) |

| So glad to hear from Betty and Ron. The swap would not be the same with out you! Granny- I have a copy for Michell and James and I'll save one for you too. Annuals are always welcome. I'd rather not buy mine if given a choice. Swappin' is so much more fun any how! That's a great article in 'Columbus Monthly'. I just hope that everyone who reads it and wants to come will RSVP so we know what to expect. Could be crazy! We will be counting on you experienced swappers to help us out like you have in the past. I have some Reticulatas and a few other things blooming. It's so exciting this time of year. Never know what I'll find out in the garden. ~~Mimi |

| Hi all. I just stumbled on this and am a bit intrigued. It sounds like there are a lot of outdoor garden plants involved-what about indoor plants? Curiously, is anyone trading carnivorous plants? Either indoor or outdoor? I'd probably show up with some and would be interested in finding something similar. Let's see how the veggie seedlings do too-I could bring some of those as well. This sounds great! |
RE: Central Ohio Plant Swap & Potluck - Sat. May 17, 2008

Granny email me on your new email and I will send new pics. You won't believe how the kids have changed. I can't wait to see the article. I have been looking for it and got on their website and emailed them a couple of months ago. Thanks MiMi for getting us a copy. ilbasso- Welcome. We sometimes have indoor plants at the swap as well. Hey, we take anything. We even have a non- plant category. I know Noah would be interested in a carnivorous plant. He got a half dead one from Lowe's but wasn't able to bring it back. Can't wait till the rain stops. It's getting soupy around here. Tuscarawas county can't take much more. Hope everyone is staying dry and dreaming of lush gardens. |
RE: Central Ohio Plant Swap & Potluck - Sat. May 17, 2008

| Welcome Ilbasso! We have house plants, veggies, nonplant items...you name it! We have a great time too! Beverly and I get pretty busy so be sure to find us and introduce yourself. We all love to make new gardener friends! Think DRY and SPRING! ~~Mimi |

| Hi Ilbasso...welcome. We hope you do come to the swap. Yes, theres usually some tropicals and houseplants that folks bring. However, it's different every year. I'll bring a copy of the article to the swap. Think spring! Beverly |
Baker's Acres Gift Certificate!!!
| | |
| Hi folks....once again, Chris Baker, wonderful owner of Bakers Acres Greenhouse in Alexandria Oh - has donated a $50.00 gift certificate as our Grand Door Prize for the swap. He is so, so generous. He just sent it to me. I have never asked him for this - it's always been his kind generosity of spirit! (This is the third or fourth year.) If you've never been to Baker's Acres folks - well, it's worth going to see the wonderful set up his has, fantastic variety of plants, and friendly folks who work there. Thanks to Chris Baker! Mimi and I try to get there every year. |

Hi! I have been watching the postings and getting more and more excited - I've been asking all my gardening friends if they want to come, only one has committed so far, but she has asked some work friends, so there may be quite a few of us from the Dayton and west area coming! So, I notice that non-plant items are welcome also. I was thinking about making some of the marble/bowling balls to bring, but I wondered if anyone would be interested in those? Also, it may be mentioned above somewhere, sorry if I missed it, but will there be lists going up of what people are bringing or what they are looking for? Not to bring back up a touchy issue, but my thoughts about bringing kids and letting them pick - you guys are braver than I am - I will not be bringing my girls, they aren't that interested in my plants anyway and this is just a fun time for ME, ME, ME!!! |
RE: Central Ohio Plant Swap & Potluck - Sat. May 17, 2008

| Ok I just guess we are growing future gardeners...Naomi was crying last night because she wanted to go help Daddy in the garden. They did get potatoes in last night. Noah probably would have been out there too but was working on homework. Hope everyone has a green, bright, and productive day. Peace. |
RE: Central Ohio Plant Swap & Potluck - Sat. May 17, 2008

| Hi Kelly! glad to hear that you, your girls and your friend are all coming to the swap! I brought a bowling ball I'd decorated with glass for a door prize a couple of years ago and it was one of the first picks. That makes me think that folks would be VERY interested in yours as a swap item. Don't make my mistake tho. I didn't bring anything to keep it from rolling around. It was a pain. If I bring one this year I'll bring an old plastic tub or such for it to sit in so that it won't wander! I don't know what garden gizmos I'll be bringing for door prizes this year. I'll try to keep at least one of my bottle suncatchers for the raffle. I'm sooooooo jazzed! Darby Creek Nursery (that's the one just up the road from the swap) has accepted a rack of my "Garden Gems by Mimi" on consignment! We'll see how they sell during their big open house at the end of April. My hair dresser has sold my first one at her shop. Who would have thunk they'd sell there? I hope that this business takes off. It would be a great way to help pay for FIVE missions and FIVE college educations. I don't want to have to give up full time motherhood for a paycheck. Sorry, I guess I rambled off topic. I just had to share my news with my garden friends! Here's hoping for a dryer spring! ~~Mimi |

Mimi, I'm so glad you are selling your Garden Gems, I do crafts plus sell some of my plants at our Master Gardeners Home and Garden show. I just want to pay for my Habit! ha Yesterday I got some onions planted but with babysitting a 2 yr. old it's kinda hard as I want to keep her in my site all the time. I have a few water features, (nothing fancy) lotus pond, large pot in the ground with fish in it which she took a head dive into last year, boy did she look awful with all the green muck on her not to mention the smell! Into the bath tub she went! I could bring some live fish this year, anyone interested? I have already potted some single hollyhocks, so by May they should be looking good. Might have some Mimosa trees, Sedums, always bring a door prize even if its a great plant, everyone likes a prize. also something for the non garden spot, if anyones interested to know, at the fall swap someone brought alot of halloween stuff they were tired of, someone else was having a halloween party so that stuff was right up their alley. So new people you can bring most anything for that spot. One year someone brought large cans of Cherrys they didn't want, my Mom made jelly with them... can't wait... |

Hey guys and gals! My trout lilies are coming up!! They were freebies from some catalog so I did not think they would do well but.... yeah! though something did come along and eat the blossums off of the tulips out back :(. Anyway I start diging plants this weekend am going to redo my sunken ponds so fish would be great for me as long as they were not too big. ( I am re-using an old double concrete basement sink) I'll have some pond stuff and a giant peace lily a friend gave me to swap for them and who knows what else. I am going to be bringing the pots and possibly some wooden edging and old bricks. I don't know what mum or the coworkers will bring. I'll have my 3 yr old nephew and if his plants grow (marigolds and jonny jump ups) he'll have some to swap too otherwise I'll give him some of mine to trade. I just cant' wait for the weekend (I'm working two jobs right now so I can't wait to get in the dirt - even if it is smell old pond slime!!) see you all there. MIMI - did you need any more door prizes that giant peace lily I have would be great for one if you would like it otherwise I'll find something else. No time for pics this year. ;( |
RE: Central Ohio Plant Swap & Potluck - Sat. May 17, 2008

| Thanks for you kind thoughts Linda! If they don't sell I'll be bringing them for door prizes. Hey Mouse! The peace lily would be a great door prize! We accept all donations for the prize table. Not everyone can get the $50 gift certificate to Bakers Acres but it's great when there are LOTS of prizes so lots of folks get something. I just uncovered a stained glass suncatcher that I found at a garage sale really cheap last year. I had forgotten it last fall so it can come be a prize this spring! See you all soon! ~~Mimi |

Ok, well we now have several varieties in the garden...carrots, beets(the kid's favorite & mine as well), potatoes, & peas. Anyone interested in Jerusalem artichokes? I think we have 4 or 5 varieties. Linda..Have the 2 year old help. That way they are always in your sight. They can push dirt over your seeds. I think that was Naomi's job last year. They are getting dirty, which they love, and you can keep and eye on them, which you love. By the way I have fond memories of my dad making "dolls" for me out of my Grandmother's holly hocks. I lovingly refer to mimosa's as truffula trees from my beloved Lorax. Gardens give such good memories. Oh and what kind of fish? I think they would be great, with so many of us having water features, a wonderful addition. Better go. Hoping for a dry weekend so we can get more done. So much for what the inside of my house looks like...it's spring and the garden needs work. Peace. |

xaroleht - how much space do the Jerusalem artichokes take up? and how much sun? I have heard they are very very yummy and I would love to add some to my garden and if not find room in my fathers (little does he know my "plots and plans" for his vegigarden this year! *he heh he heh* evil chorkle.) Beverly and or Mimi anything I can bring other then whatever I have said above that can help ya'll out? paperplates, forks, hot dogs etc... If you let me know what time you will be setting up I'll make sure to be there. Does anyone have any toad lilies? I'll be willing to do a special swap for them. I have become hooked on the dang things.Well them and violets, and woodlands, and .... okay I am just hooked on dirt. |

| Hi Kin2mice - I think we've got most of what we need. Thanks, though. We'll be there between 9 and 9:30 - just to get things set up, signs out, and table clothes on. We'd love for you to come and lend a hand...Thanks so much. I have some toadlilies - Tricyrtis maculata (I think). I'll have Murray dig up a division for you. I totally understand about being hooked on dirt! So happy today...my first daffs are blooming. Think spring...think swap....Beverly |

Mouse, Jerusalem Artichokes do like sun. They are related to the sunflower. They also can become invasive unless you thin out your crop or the little burrowing rodents get into them. One gentleman we gave some to last year had that problem and we had to give him more this year. You can use them like a potato or water chestnut. They tend to stay crisp like a water chestnut and have a sweeter taste. I really like them in soups better than potatoes. Naomi likes them raw. They are good for diabetics because the sugar in them is not digestible by humans so they actually help lower you blood sugar rather than raise it. (They sometimes cause people "tooting" problems. I haven't had that trouble but it could happen.) We have I think 4 or 5 types. James has some already potted up. Will be sure to set some aside for you if you would like to give them a try. Maybe that can be our side trade for the hens and chicks. James & the kids got most of the veggie garden ready with the nice weather this weekend. Besides beets, carrots, potatoes, and peas I think they got the Jerusalem Artichoke beds redone, put in green beans, chick peas, and maybe something else, and re-potted the tomato seedlings. Flowerbeds and Japanese garden still need some work. Daffodils are blooming and hyacinths are coming along. Have a wonderful day. Peace & prayers. |

Mouse, We've got a few different varieties of toad lillies. I think I saw the first one poking out of the ground the other day. I'll check in a few days to see which ones made it. Do you have a lot of different kinds already? Got any hostas you want to swap for? If not, maybe we could just trade toad lillies for toad lillies, to get some new varieties! You can email me at sunion98@yahoo.com so we can "chat" more, if you'd like. Anyone want to do a "special" side hosta swap? Of course, I'm still waiting to see what comes up, but I'm sure getting excited! A couple are already peaking through the ground now. Stephanie |

Would anyone be interested in some experimental tomato plants? In my enthusiasm last year, I saved seeds from some tomato plants a friend gave me--I found out later they were hybrids. But since I went to the trouble to ferment and store the seeds, I started a bunch of them anyway. And then I had to order 10 kinds of tomato seeds from the catalog and grew those too. And I got very high germination rates on everything. So in addition to more heirloom tomato seedlings than I have room to grow, I have about 3 dozen seedlings from my mystery saved hybrid seeds. Would anyone be interested in having those? Of course I'll definitely bring any leftover heirloom seedlings that I don't have room to plant. |

| Well, after this lovely warm weather I have discovered that I just may have a few plants to bring after all, not just bowling balls! I have a number of dark pink mondarda coming up, a gorgeous magenta colored yarrow, and a pretty red yarrow, most likely black-eyed susans, and I have mint. I actually have a few varieties of mints - including apple and chocolate. However, I am planning on pulling out most all of them, so if anyone is interested, let me know and I'll pot some up for you. Oh, I also have seeds for these bushes that I have. I'm sorry, I don't know what the actual name is, but they are in the hibiscus family and are EXTREMELY hardy!! They naturalize REALLY well. They are gorgeous and really easy to grow. My Mom's family in KY call them "corkwood". I have seeds for white, pink and a dark pink/red. If anyone is interested, let me know. Getting very excited!! |

| Count me in for 2. Am very excited about my first swap meet. I have garden junk/items to trade, some odds and ends plants, started winter/spring sowing late, so probably won't have many to trade. Interested in the colored yarrow, want some mimosa trees, a lilac bush, pretty plants, ha. Been transplanting bachelor buttons, daffs are blooming, mystery lillies are huge, pussy willow fuzzy. I LOVE SPRING! |

dawncols - I would love some of the mystery tomatos! I have some left over bell pepper and eggplant seed if you want to trade. There is still plenty of time to get them to grow for this summers garden. I grew over 30 peppers and 25 eggplants for my dad if they all survive I'll have extra seedlings as well for you if you would prefer that. The eggplants are "Hansel" and a mystery bunch, the peppers are "fat n sassys, big bertha, and some weird hybrid." we ordered them from Jungs seed and so far have had great germination from them. If you plant seed in may the harvest will be in late augs early sept. If the packet instructions are correct. I have much more seed (about 30 total of the peppers and 45 of the eggplant) then I will have seedlings. just email me or post (kin2mice@yahoo.com) |

kelly_oh - the bushes you have might also be called "rose of sharon" they are a member of the hybiscus family and are almost impossible to kill. I would love some of the mint. If you dont mind. I have mostly shade stuff to swap for the yard but I found some cheap seed for other herbs at a garden center. I have not tried them but if I get them going I'll bring some "left overs" - I think they are sage, oragano, and some sort of basil. I think. My mind is going my little and only brother is getting married this weekend and I have packing and doubling checking my camera equipment - I have to shoot it(saves me from spending money on a gift.....LOL) see you all in may. |
RE: Central Ohio Plant Swap & Potluck - Sat. May 17, 2008

Mice, nope, I'm pretty sure they aren't rose of sharon, we have some of those too :). I'm attaching a link, that I hope will show you a couple of the flowers. They really are gorgeous. Let me know if it works or not, please, this is my first attempt. |
Here is a link that might be useful: hibiscus bush

kelly_oh- do they die back every year? I am stumped. I have some perennial bubble gum hibicus that I am hoping will come up this year. (I have to see if I am allergic to them otherwise into the swap they go...) If you collect hibiscus I have some white water hibiscus that if it survived might be able to be divided the flowers are bigger then a dinner plate. good luck. Mouse |
RE: Central Ohio Plant Swap & Potluck - Sat. May 17, 2008

Mouse, yep, they die to the ground, but come back bigger and better the next year. Hmmm, the white water hibiscus - is that an actual water plant? my friend that is supposed to come has a water feature..... So, now I'm starting to wonder about food. What all is everyone bringing? |
RE: Central Ohio Plant Swap & Potluck - Sat. May 17, 2008

| How big are the blooms? They look (and sound) like dinner plate Hibiscus to me. I'd love to have more so I collected seed last fall and started some in my winter sowing. ~~Mimi |
RE: Central Ohio Plant Swap & Potluck - Sat. May 17, 2008

Mimi, I don’t think I’d call them dinner plate size, but I’d say they are about 8". I just love them, they are super easy and just beautiful. I don’t think there will be any babies up by mid May, so I’ll bring seeds, for anyone that wants some. I do want to mention 2 issues that I have with these bushes though – 1. the dreaded Japanese beetles adore the buds and the blooms – I hate those little buggers!! 2. they spread REALLY easily – this is great if you have a large area you just want to fill with gorgeous blooming bushes, but my area is not so big, so I am constantly pulling up babies. Where my family lives in KY (where I got my first seeds!) there is an entire hillside filled with these bushes, it is absolutely gorgeous. Do you think you are going to have any larkspur to bring to the swap? I would love some, if so! I went to a garden center yesterday, saw lots of plants I wanted, but I didn’t buy, I’m waiting until after the swap! Here are a few things on my wish list if anyone has them: Saxifrage Pasque flower Blue Star Sea Holly Cornflower Coreopsis – any color other than yellow Monkshood Red Helenium Does any one know how to divide pincushions? I have a gorgeous scarlet one that I will be bringing a few of, but I’d like to divide some of them first. |

Hi Kelly, I looked at the photos you posted and I think the flowers are called Mallows.I had a Rose Mallow a few years ago that looked just like the photo of the red one you have. It came back the following year but got heaved from its spot that fall and hasn't been seen since. And I do think they are in the Hibiscus family. Just something to give you some thoughts on in another area. Granny57x |
RE: Central Ohio Plant Swap & Potluck - Sat. May 17, 2008

| Question for Kelly. If your dinner plates aren't 8" than what size are they? Dinner plate Hibiscus, Hardy Hibiscus, Rose Mallow, Swamp Mallow are all Hibiscus moscheutos. I brought a couple to the swap last year and may have one to bring this year.
 |
RE: Central Ohio Plant Swap & Potluck - Sat. May 17, 2008

Mao Tse, Yes, they are about 8", I guess I just think more the 12" size are dinner plate. Whatever they are called, they are sizable and very pretty. I may have talked another newbie gardener into coming!! |

| Is anyone interested in brugmansia, angel trumpets. If so I'll pot the cuttings up now and they'll be growing good by the time of the swap. They should have a nice flush of flowers by the end of the summer and if you can bring them inside next winter you'll really have a show stopper with many flushes next year. |
RE: Central Ohio Plant Swap & Potluck - Sat. May 17, 2008

| My rose mallow are small less than 2 inches across. I wouldn't mind trying anything new. I would really like the "dinner plate" hibiscus. Kids and James got out for a little while on Sat but it was pretty cold. Hard to keep Naomi out of the garden. Noah was looking for ants for the ant farm he built at a Lowe's workshop. For anyone who has kids 5 and up it is a really neat program they have. Twice a month they have a free workshop for kids to build something. They get an apron, goggles, a patch for each project and our Lowe's does certificates as well. Back to gardening. Don't know what all we will have to trade yet but will check everybody's list and let you know if we can help. Have a good one. Peace |

Mao, ME, ME, ME!! I have some seeds that I keep trying with, but they just won’t grow!! I would love a started brug cutting. It doesn’t matter, but what color are they? Excited!! Xaro, I will bring you a bag full of seeds, and you should get PLENTY of bushes from them. They won’t bloom the first year, but the next they’ll be beautiful!! I’ll keep an eye out for any babies, too. |

| I haven't posted anything until now, because as it turns out, the swap is the same day we have a really big event planned at work, that I've always played a key role in. But I finally told my boss this morning that they'll have to get along without me, as I'm not putting in yet another 10 hours of unpaid work and giving up something I love. I don't have a lot of plants, but I'm sure whatever a bring will find a good home. And I've got some good door prize/non-plant swap stuff. I'll bring either white chili or pulled pork and some lavendar cheesecake for the potluck. So I will be there! Looking forward to seeing you all, and I'm sure this time, I'll be early.... |

| Hi folks...I LOVE all these "plant swap talk." Just gets me in the mood for spring, pretty flowers and trading plants. I was in Michigan last weekend (visiting my family and grandson) and saw Ron and Betty, too. They are excited about coming down for the swap. Alison - I am so, so glad you'll be coming to the swap!! I remember the first swap all those years ago. I think you had a truck - I saw you had a big lavender plant - I think I shouted, "Here comes lavender!!!!" Isn't that a silly thing to remember. I also remember Noah being a toddler, I think, at that first swap. About 5 weeks away! Woo - hoo! Beverly |

| Hi all, I was looking at this post and was thinking I might be interested in coming. I live in Parkersburg,WV. I saw someone post something about bringing non plant items and that's my guestion to you. I haven't been gardening long and don't think I have alot to offer plant wise. Can I get involved in the swap with things other than plants? PS. I'll take this opportunity to tell you that I spend a few hours a day looking at forums and learning, but never post really. Anyways, I really enjoy this site and can't tell you how much I have learned. I joined freecycle and just got a wheelbarrow today for flowers, I set up a rain barrel this weekend and have 4 raised bed I'm doing square foot gardening with. You'd be impressed ;) Thank You |

| Sounds like you're doing pretty well, andrea! You're definitely welcome -- it's always a great time and is especially helpful for new gardeners. Not only can you pick up tons of plants, but you can talk to the gardeners who actually grow them and know them well. They can give you a lot more useful information than the average stockboy at the box store, or the seasonal cash register operator at the garden center. Non-plant items are always useful, too; espeically if you don't have a lot of plants of your own. Some of the things people have brought include stacks of gardening magazines and books, garden ornaments, duplicate tools, painted pots, planters, trellises... the list goes on and on. I think Bev laid the guidelines out pretty well when she said to make sure that each item/bundle of items is of a size that you'd be pleased to receive. You don't have to go overboard; just try to be fair. Look forward to seeing you. |

| Ok first signs of Hostas have arrived. Hopefully things will come up in time to pot for the swap. James split some grasses this last weekend. Anyone looking for one in particular? Hopefully starting on the garden at the historical village this weekend. Pray for good weather our 1st group comes Friday. Thanks Kelly Alison your pulled pork is fabulous and the lavender cheese cake sounds wonderful. Glad you will be able to make it. Sometimes you just need to say "no" and do something for yourself. Can you teach me how now that you've figured it out? Bev I think we ended up with that lavender but that is the one thing I haven't been able to get going in our yard and I don't even know if Noah was a year old at that first swap and now he is 9. eeeks. It seems like just yesterday. Andrea non plant items are always welcome. Your junk may be someone else's treasure. We have one person who just had blown glass her 1st year and now I think we have her converted but now some of us vie for the glass pieces she brings. I know I am building a nice collection. Hopefully there will be some there this year...hint...hint. Can't wait to see gardening friends of years past and new ones we just haven't gotten to meet yet. Peace. |

| EEEEEEEK! I've been up to my ears in family and other projects. I'm doing some scene painting for a theatre company, baseball with Daniel, lessons with other sons, helping with a benefit auction auction, big PTO project, shopping for our cruise and all the regular stuff that comes with a family of seven. I just realized that I'd better get potting! It's less than a month until our cruise and when I get back that Thursday, Saturday is the swap!!! Don't know how I'll fit it all in but some how I always seem to! I'm glad to hear that Alison will be coming. I listen to her while picking two of the guys up from school. Been wondering why we hadn't heard from her yet! Welcome Andrea! We were all newbies once so come on and have a great time with us! Gotta go pot! |

Xaro, There is a new website starting for The Lorax Project - when I saw it I thought you you and the mimosas. I have a mimosa that I got from my cousin last year that I have babied inside all winter, it is growing well and is anxious to be outside in the sun. I'm not sure where to plant it, though! Only ONE more month til the swap!! |

| Well, I'm feeling better about my plants now. Sam and I dug and potted about 30 things in the last two days. I gave some to neighbors so I only have 26 on my bench. More will be coming. That said, would anyone be interested in baby arborvitaes? The neighbor's tall shrubs are a favorite nesting spot and my fountain is a favorite watering spot for the local birdies. It looks as if they planted some seeds for me! I have two babies in inconvenient places that I can pot up. They are about 5 inches tall right now. Let me know folks, other wise it's the compost bin for them! Gotta run! Sam's messy room and spring clothes unpacking and winter clothes packing await me. After I get Sam on the bus about noon I'll be recreating the side of a barn with a Mail Pouch sign on it. I hope to get all of that done before kids come home from school. Wooo! Hoooo! Wish me luck! ~~Mimi |

You all know how much I like to get in on the Gabfest. Been missing out because of this thing here. It's so good to see everyone posting with their garden and non garden items and the stories behind some of them, and lets not forget the food.I can hardley wait till then. I've been walking around looking at all my Beautiful Flowers in with all my Beautiful Weeds((Not)) And It gives me so much pleasure Knowing my Weeds don't stand a chance come Sat,When my helpers come to rid them.At least put a dent in them. A lot of my Hostas are poking through and looking pretty good now.I have a lot of the Arum plant that I would like to do some side trades for.Anyone interested? I don't know right off which ones they are.But I love them. They are Beautiful and get red berries late in the year. I will be bringing maybe 8/10 flats of impatients and pretty many plants of the Coleus and some Batface and a some Cigar plants.I also would like to do some side trades for the African Blue Basil.I love this Basil the most of any of them. Because of misunderstandings about how the plants are chosen.I have decided to unpack all my flats of annuals. That way everyone will have a chance to take some.If anyone wants a full flat of any annuals I am bringing, email me and let me know. We'll work something out. Wanna get back outside, Looking forward to seein everyone and meeting newbies!!! Margie ((Granny57x)) |

I would love the African Blue Basil. How does it do in a pesto? Are you looking for anything? Kelly thanks I'll have to check out the site. One year James did some searching and found a copy of the book from before they removed the line about Lake Erie which I had really been wanting. Better go get the kids to bed. Just got back from a program at school and need to go to Schoenbrunn tomorrow. My running begins for the spring. Peace, Prayers, & Posies |

Wow Mimi!!! Your recreating a Mail Pouch sign? I remember growing up and seeing all the Mail Pouch signs. They were the only signs I remember and loved.I miss seeing them and when I happen to come across one every now and then.I feel like I've gone back in time and Hit the Jackpot all in one. Were lucky you've taken on the job of bringing back some wonderful memories.Keep up the good work.Your so talented and creative. Michelle, I will make sure you get the African Blue Basil. It is wonderful to cook with and I'm sure it would make great Pesto,Even though I can't swear to it cause I've never made Pesto before. It has a wonderful taste and it's Beautiful to look at. | Always, always, Granny! I've been out planting things in the garden at work. Instead of a cake, we always get our office manager plants for Administrative Professionals Day. This week I planted out a bunch of perennials in our work garden. The lilac bushes we bought for her several years ago are starting to pop, and today she was just sitting in the garden with a blissful look on her face. That's why we garden! I've got somethings potted up, and some door prize/non-plant trades packed and ready to go. Just to give you a hint of what I've got....

Kelly OH, I devide Pinchusion by looking at the roots and just cutting down through the roots. I have never see a scarlet colored one. I have some mini lavender and tall lavender. Will you be bring any scarlet ones? If so I would like to try one. Our hostas have really popped up the last few days. It looks like we might be able to pot some up next week. We did pot up today: Winter Aconite, Speedwell, Pasque Flower, Virginia Bluebells, Celandine Poppy, Balloon Flower, Wild Ginger, Lupine, and Columbine. That was all for today. Beverly, it was fun to see you and Murray. Can't wait until it's time go to Columbus. |

Hagey, That's what I was thinking I'd do, gosh the ones I got last year are huge and the color really is pretty. I'll definitely bring you one, do you think you'll have any Pasque Flower we could privately swap for?? If not, that's ok, I'll still be bringing some. I did a mini walk around today and I can't believe the change since yesterday!! I have hostas in places I really don't remember planting them!! I must have, because they are too far away from the established ones. I must say that they are in good spots, too, so I was doing something right last summer :). My Balloon Flowers are popping up out of the ground, too! Ok, as far as non plant items - I have these rings, sorry no picts right now, but they are perfect silver circles - they are actually the "handles" from a wheelchair, for the person in the chair to propel themselves. Anyway, they came off my dad's old wheelchair and they are just such good junk I couldn't throw them out. I was going to put them up on the Garden Junk forum, but I thought I'd offer them at the swap first. If anyone is interested just let me know and I'll bring them. I can get dimensions if you want, but they are a smidge smaller in diameter than manual wheelchair wheels. Is anyone going to be hitting the National Road(US 40) yard sales coming up? I've never been, but I think I would be in heaven! Is there a list of what foods people are bringing? I am trying to think of something but wanted to see what others are bringing before I decide. |

Bluebells are blooming and hostas are coming up like gangbusters. Busy Sat but hopefully can get a few things potted on Sun. Peace |

| steph98 - I tried to email you but they keep getting bounced back I am sincerely interested in your toadlilies. Could you email me. (email at end of note) dawncol - would you like some of my pepper or eggplant seeds or seedlings for some of your tomatoes? Otherwise I have shady plants and some water plants if you would like to trade see email at end of note xaroleht- anything else you want for a couple of your jeusalem artichokes? I have not forgotten the hens and chickens! I'll have at least 1-2 bags full. email - kin2mice@yahoo.com Also if anyone is a reader out there I am immersed in a book called "Robbing the bees" by Holley Bishop it is a wonderful book on bee keeping and bees in general with interesting insights in to the roll bees play in keeping our gardens bright and colourful. I've learned alot just on how small things I think I am doing to help my plants just might be killing or hurting the bees. (yes, I like bees even though they really don't like me!!!) anyway it is a great book and I'll recommend it to any gardener. See you all in a few weeks. I'll have a full list of what I am going to bring posted in a week or so. I have to check out mums garden to see what I can raid from there! It so nice to have her around. I' wont be posting/checking this site until then as I am currently working 2 jobs and just eat, sleep and garden and occationaly see my boyfriend and cats! Ah what we do for vacation money LOL. |

I've potted up some yucca, lemon thyme, obedient plant, coral bells, black eyed susans, anemone and some creeping phlox. I need to get some dianthus potted up too. I remember it and the phlox going pretty quick last year. I should also have a few heirloom tomatoes. they've sprouted pretty good for me this year. my peppers and eggplant haven't though :( I haven't decided what I'm bringing foodwise. last year I took choc chip cookies. | Mao, I've been thinking about the Brugs and I'm trying not to be selfish. While I would love to have one, I hate to take one only for the summer, since I really have no place to winter it inside. So, if others want the cuttings, let them have them, if there are any left, I'll take one. This is a problem I have, I want all the pretties, then after I get them I realize I don't have a spot to put them. I've been working in the garden today and working on some bowling balls. I have potted up some of the magenta yarrow and a couple monarda. I have also been yanking up weeds and mint. My back is totally protesting. I have saved some mint so far, besides the regular mint (sorry, I have no idea what kind it is, but it smells great and I hear makes wonderful tea), I have some Apple Mint, Chocolate Mint, and some Pineapple mint. Please, please let me know if you want any because after tomorrow other than the little bits I have put aside, its all going to be dumped into the field next door. Betty, yes, please, a lavender pincushion would be great! Tomorrow, time allowing, I'm going to attack my scarlet pincushions. They are already as big now as they were at the end of the season last year!! I'll put one aside for you :). |

Kelly, I'll take a pot of each of your mints. I'm sure if you take them to the swap they will be snatched up. I'd like a scarlet pincushion to if you'll have enough. Wondering how to do the bowling balls, whats the best to use to glue stuff on? would caulk last? |

Hosta, Ok, I'll save you some mint :) I should have a couple of the pincushions if they are amendable to dividing. For the bowling balls, I use the GE II silicone, clear, I think its for windows and doors. As long as you give it enough time to set up before putting them outside it should hold just fine. I have a couple balls outside that I did at least 2 years ago and they are still in good shape. |

She usually brings enough for several of us to add to our collection. I usually even give up my 1st choice of plant for a piece. Kids and James were out again today. I wish I could get rid of these sinus headaches so I could enjoy it too. grrr. Will have him add a list of what he has potted up. Peace |

Ok, now I'm really curious, tell me about shadow's glass, please. Well, today I moved and split two of the scarlet pincushions, I felt like I was killing them to separate them, but I have at least 3-4 good sized plants and a few smaller ones, if they don't die on me. Hmmm, is it obvious that I haven't split many plants in the past? I tried to move an asiatic lily, one that seems to have wandered from the mother plant and I think all I did was kill it. I don't believe I dug deep enough. I did talk to it when I replanted it, so maybe it will live. I believe I have the name for my magenta yarrow now, I'm pretty sure it is Richard Nelson. The monarda I have is Marshall's Delight, I believe. Does anyone have any Monarda Lambada? I grew that in Washington and just loved it!! I also have another plant, a gift from my aunt, so I'm not totally sure of this, but I believe it is pink primrose. They are completely gorgeous when blooming, and I have seen them rebloom later in the season, if you cut them down a bit. I will warn you however, that they will fill in QUICKLY! But if you have an area that you would like to see masses of pink blooms, these work. |
Here is a link that might be useful: picture of a pink primrose

Kelly, Shadowgarden blows glass and makes the most wonderful things. When she 1st joined us she didn't have many plants to swap so she brought some of her glass. Some people didn't realize it was for a swap and it sat for a couple of rounds. I was lucky enough to get a pretty glass flower that year. Now there are people, myself included, who give up their first pick of a plant to get a piece of her glass. Over the years I have gotten a really neat mushroom, flowers, paperweights, glass rods, glass bubbles, etc. I look forward to adding to my collection each year. Some she sees as mistakes but every creation is wonderful and beautiful. She now has plants to swap but always thinks of her friends and tries to bring some glass for us addicts as well. Peace |

| Boy oh boy...I love all this "swappin" talk going on. YAY...Shadowgarden, I am so glad you can come to the swap. It's wonderful that you bring the glass to trade. Moa tse mom- I wish you & I could put dibs on all the glass!! I love it too. I feel honored to have a lovely collection of it in my gardens. At this point I have some herbstone rudebeckia dug up and some sweet woodruff (thanks to Mimi - for the help). Murray will dig up more this weekend. I don't know what I'll fix - usually is old fashioned sweet and sour cucumber and onions. I'll have to think about. Granny - I'd love one of those basils, too - if you have enough. Maybe we can do a trade. It's so nice that you are back online!!!! Think spring everyone...think swap! ...Beverly |

| Hi folks! Granny!!!!! Of course you count!!!!! I'll take pictures of the Mail Pouch "barn" and other stuff so Lee can show you on his computer. Beverly hasn't even seen them yet! I broke my little finger and am waiting to see the hand specialist to be sure I didn't damage any tendons or ligaments. I hope not. This nine fingered typing is for the birds! I keep trying to use the splinted finger and typing really weird stuff! I also pulled the muscles of my chest badly enough that they thought that I might have a broken rib. Sheesh! I'm still going to find a way to pot up those last few plants! There is NO WAY I'll let if spoil my once in a lifetime trip with the boys. We're going snorkeling, para sailing, catamaran sailing, swimming with the dolphins and even some time for just laying on the beach! No heavy lifting for me until after the cruise! I'm overwhelmed with all the stuff I need to do in the next two weeks so I'd better go make another list and start checking things off! Barbi, was that you who wanted the baby arborvitae? I'll save them for you. I did dig up the campion that seeded itself in my stone path before I hurt myself. (*again*) They are a nice biennial. Mine are white but Beverly has some rose ones so who knows what color the seeds the bees made! I have Solomon's seal that needs dividing and some salvia that seeded into my stone path too. The candy tuft jumped the path but it might have to wait 'til fall. I can't wait to see Betty and Ron all the way from Michigan. I keep killing my forget-me-nots! Wonder what I'm doing to them? I hope everyone is doing well and my penchant for injuring myself is not "catching"! ~~Mimi |

Alison,Mimi, Thanks for saying I count,I was joking when I said it.But it's nice to know you care enough to respond.A pity party for Granny.LOL I love you all for it. I have been out looking at all the Hostas that are coming up and reading all the name tags.I forgot how many different Hostas I have ended up with.I may not have large enough Hostas to get a good size split from,But I will have some nice and different ones for a side swap if anyone is interested.I don't know what they'll be just yet. Beverly,I surely will save you an African Blue Basil.I'd like another start of the Grosso Lavender if you have any left.I think the cats dug in mine last year and then with the weather,It heaved up out of it's spot.I was heart sick.I really love the plant.Yours is Beautiful!! I have a thought!!I do that sometimes. You know --Think!! In my opinion, Beverly and Mimi,Who put this swap together and have a hard time getting out there and picking a plant or plants should have first crack at picking whatever they want for the first round before any of us.I feel they deserve the Queen Bee treatment. They do so much for all of us and miss out on so much. Now they have problems with their fingers and I think Bev still has a problem with her foot. I just think it would be nice if we could all extend a go for it and run with it hand. Just my opinion. And no one paid me to say this:) I do accept donations though!!!LOL:) Kidding!! Granny57 |

| Granny, I second that idea, if I'm allowed, even though I haven't been to a swap before. It is time consuming to organize such a big event, Bev and Mimi should definitely get first pick if only as a "thank you" from the rest of us. I am not thrilled with this "freezing temperatures" at night stuff that's gone on last night and tonight. Not happy at all. I was wondering if anyone has a fragrant viburnum baby bush they wanted to swap? 18 more days!!! Are most people that attend the swap from the Columbus area or are there any others coming from the west side toward Dayton?? |

| Kelly, If you can find a start of each of the Mints, I would like them. What do are you looking for in exchange? Mimi, Do you need some starts of the Forget Me Nots? What else are you looking for? I want to know, as I was wondering what we can bring for your little surprise. I do have Beverly's all ready. Hostalavista - When we get started later in the week, I will let you know what hostas we are digging? Are you bringing any this year? Betty |

| hi everyone, just a quick note to let you know I'm still coming, maybe even be bringing 2 people with me instead of just 1. But my first attempts at wintersowing stuff doesn't look like it's going to amount to much for the swap, so it looks like I will end up bringing mostly hens and chicks, and probably some fire king yarrow if I can get it seperated out without killing it off. Will look around and see what else might take some divisions... LOL!!! This is my first year, so I will bring what I can, hope it's enough. Can't wait to meet you all!! See you soon!!! |

Betty, You are already bringing me the Pasque flower and the lavendar pincushion, remember? I do have some mint left to pot, and a friend just brought me a boxful of pots to use, hurray!! What color are your lupines and columbine? How do these "side trades" work? do we do those right away, and get those plants out of the general trade area? And the regular trade, does everyone just walk around during the rounds and take a plant? I am making the people around me crazy, I think, because I'm so excited!! They will be glad when the swap is over :) |

Kelly OH, I want to use the mint for the Demo Garden at the Garden Project. A lot of people go through there and we try to get herbs that people use in there cooking. I have a columbine that I will put your name on that is called Chocolate Soldier - brown/purple color. I will also add a lupine and that is blue. I like to exchange my personal trades when I arrive and get them in the car before we eat. It seems like after it is such a rush. We are there early as we stop over to Beverly's house and come with them. Is there any thing else? Thanks. Betty |
