| Hello everyone! It's time to start planning for the fall swap already and once again Mary Dawn, Stephanie (Steph98) and myself are hosting. We have reserved a shelter at Windsor Park in Grove City this year, this will be our second year at this location and our third year of hosting the swap.
MARK YOUR CALENDAR & TELL YOUR FRIENDS
Here is the information:
Date: Saturday, September 26, 2009
Time: 11:00 am
Place: Windsor Park in Grove City, Ohio
TRADING MATERIALS: plants, well rooted cuttings potted up, bulbs, shrubs, happy seedlings, garden ornaments,& bundled garden magazines, extra gardening implements, etc.
(PLEASE MARK ALL PLANT MATERIALS WITH THE PLANT NAME AND
CARE (shade, sun, etc) REQUIRED!!! Also, mark any plants as invasive or poisonous, if known)
POT LUCK: Please bring a dish to pass with serving untensil & your own beverage We will provide plates, plastic silverware, napkins & cup. It's a good idea to mark your serving spoons etc. with your name. Gardeners are WONDERFUL cooks and I look forward to sampling you all's cooking almost as much as the swap itself!!
DOOR PRIZES: If anyone wants to donate something for a door prize, please feel free. Over the years we have had many really neat prizes!! Lots of fun.
This plant swap is free...but, if anyone wants to donate a dollar that day to help defray the cost of the shelter, paper products, etc. - we won't argue with you.
This should be a wonderful chance to share your passion for gardening, meet other avid and learning gardeners, have a festive and delicious meal, acquire some new plants & share your extra's. Please come with a happy and sharing heart. Bring pictures of your gardens, flowers, etc. - if you like!
This is the plan for the day:
11:00 -12:00 - people arrive, sign-in with your name and number of plants, get name tag, put plants in viewing/swap area, put dish to pass away, visit with other gardeners & start viewing plants.
Noon - have lunch
After lunch - door prize(s) awarded
1:00 - swap begins
After swap - more visiting, pack up & goodbyes.
As you may have noticed, our own Beverly (aka Storygardener) who hosts the spring swap has given us permission to use her format, and we are taking full advantage of her wonderful offer! In addition to stealing and modifying this message to meet our needs, we will be using Beverly's modified ROUND ROBIN.
Round One - pick one plant
Next Round - pick two plants
Next Round - pick three plants
Next Round - pick four plants
And so on, and so on....
This way everyone gets a chance to get some of the plants they really have on eye on. This works well and people have been very pleased in the past. Everyone should be able to take home as many plants as they bring.
Some tips for the day would include bringing a folding chair (sometimes needed), a box or container labeled with your name to put your new plants in after swapping & bring and mark your serving utensils for your dish to pass.
DIRECTIONS:
From 270, take Exit 2, US 62/OH 3 Broadway south into Grove City.
Drive approximately 1.8 mles and turn Left onto Kingston Ave.
Drive .1 miles and turn Right onto Arbutus Ave.
Drive 1 block and turn Left onto Bruce Ave.
Drive 1 block and turn Right onto Bonnie Ave.
Drive 1 block and the street empties into the Windsor Park parking lot.
PLEASE EMAIL me at jeanne6oh at yahoo dot com with RSVP so we can get a head count. (This helps us know how many plates, cups, etc. to bring)
This should be a FUN, informal day to share our love of gardening! We are contacting some of our gardening friends & alerting the Gardeweb.com people & I will be asking Beverly to alert her local garden club. Hopefully we'll have a good crowd. You could bring a gardening friend, too!
Please email with any questions, I'm jeanne6oh at yahoo dot com.
HOPE YOU CAN MAKE IT TO THE SWAP!
Good gardening...
...Jeanne, Stephanie and Mary Dawn. |

yeah! more fun! more food! more plants! best of all seeing all of the green friends again! I am thanking heaven I am making my garden paths narrower this summer. (the better to squeeze a few more plants in... does this mean I am an addict now? I can just see the 12 step program... 1.take your hands off the shovel.2. take your hands off the watering can.3.take your eyes off the seed catalog.4.stop letting your car drive you to the nursery.5.confess you have a problem. 6.try not to make too many cuttings from your houseplants unless someone wants them.7 make sure you have enough money to buy your own veggies (if not growing one or two wont hurt).8.your lawn looks bad - better water it.. if a few drops land on the garden then that is just bad luck. we all have that. 9.it is a proven fact that flowers make people feel better. growing a couple of daisys is improving your neighbors lives. 10. the daisys worked you got a couple of smiles better put in some daylilies. 11. they stoped blooming better fill in the bare patches with some varigated foliage plants for better colour. 12. take a deep breath and your cured! lol |

| My son lives in Grove City near Gantz park so I might be able to make this swap. I can leave the family at my sons and head on to the swap. Works for all of us then. :) Although a member of GW for a few years, I have fairly new to the exchanges. This is a great way to get to know fellow gardeners, eat good food, and bring home some new plants. Doesn't get any better than that, does it? |

| I hope to make it. Almost out of glass. Maybe I'll actually bring plants. Or else have to get busy and make more. |

Smitties, glad you may be able to make it. It's addicting, so beware! Once you make one, you'll be hooked. You'll find gardners made great friends and are great cooks, so it's a lovely day! Shadowgarden- good to see you'll probably be there too. Everyone loves your glass, but I'm sure they'll take plant too! I should have lots of good plants to bring! Steph98 Stephanie |

Looks like we've got about 15 people now. Round up your gardening friends and let them know. The more the merrier! Stephanie |

| I have been trying to get the word out. Mom said she was looking for a butterfly bush so if anyone has one let me know. We may have some sassafras seedlings to bring but don't know what else yet. Hope all is going well...see you in a month. |

| I am so sorry I will not be able to make it. |

| That's too bad Shadowgarden, hope we see you at the spring swap. I've got lots of Thalictrum, Balloon Flower, Daylily and Hosta seedlings (and of course plenty of roses) potted up already and hope to get a few Black Moudry Grass starts shortly. I've also got some Sweet Shrub potted up, but it's a tough plant to transplant so if it survives that process I'll bring them along. Can't wait! See you all soon. Jeanne |

| I have beed potting up plants and have a question. Do we bring all the plants in pots or do people bring bare root plants? I have some larger plants that I would prefer to just dig up, wrap, and bring. I figure they would survive since we do send bare root plants in swaps through the mail. I don't mind potting them up but it would be easier and I could bring more if I could just dig them up, wrap them, and toss them in my car for the trip. I am going to bring my daughter in law who lives in Grove city. I am going to bring the plants, and she is going to bring two types of food for the potluck. What type of things are given as door prizes and would you need to know ahead of time what we might be bringing? Since I have never been to one of these meets before, I want to be prepared. :) Looking forward to it. |

Smitties, All good questions! You can bring larger plants bare rooted. Although a lot come in pots, some people put them bare rooted in plastic bags or, if large enough, without anything. The main thing is that it has enough roots to survive! The door prizes are anything and everything: bird houses, gardening books, special plants, seeds, gift certificates, and even non-plant items like pictures, frames, bath salts/ products, etc. Anything you'd be happy to receive is a good door prize. We don't need to know what you're brining in advance. It is nice to share just to get people excited though! We'll be bringing hostas for sure. I think we'll probably have some Blooms and Birds magazines to "re-circulate" and we'll have more too, I'm sure. I was very pleased to see our Black eyed susans this year blooming very nicely. We received them in the swap a few years ago and they never did anything. This year, they came up gangbusters though! You just never know! Stephanie |

| Hey Mom said she saw Mimi on tv this weekend for the swap at the fairgrounds. We have a star in our mist. Hope everyone is doing well. Trying to plan what food we will be bringing...any thoughts? |

I didn't see the tv, but I did see Miss Mimi quoted in the Dispatch! Very cool. As for food, we've been making a corn salad that seems quite popular lately, so we'll probably bring that. Desserts never seem to go to waste! : ) Michelle- still have any of the maiden hair fern? Do you have H. Little White Lines? See everyone there! Stephanie |
RE: Central Ohio Fall Plant Swap/Potluck-Saturday 9/26/2009
| | |
| Yes Steph we still have maiden hair. Do you need one? Don't know about H. Little White Lines will have to double check with James and let you know. Keep Mom in your prayers, she is having cataract surgery today on one eye...the other will come after they see how this one goes. |
RE: Central Ohio Fall Plant Swap/Potluck-Saturday 9/26/2009

Yes, a maiden hair fern would be great. We'll bring the Little White Lines. Getting excited! Stephanie |
RE: Central Ohio Fall Plant Swap/Potluck-Saturday 9/26/2009

| Sorry if I appear to be a pest but how large of pots to most people use and about how many are usually brought? I have larger plants that will be dug right up as they are extras but also have smaller ones as well. I realise that I would pick size for size but want to make sure I am doing this right Thanks - Margo |
RE: Central Ohio Fall Plant Swap/Potluck-Saturday 9/26/2009

Steph James says he thinks we have H. little white lines...did you have one molted fire or something like that...it is a yellow hosta with red stems? We will bring the maiden hair for you for sure, no matter what. Margo don't worry about swapping size for size...we usually just stick plant for plant. I know I'm not concerned about people swapping size for size and I don't believe others are picky about that. Just come have fun, socialize, eat, make new friends and talk plants...oh and hopefully go home with plants that will fill your needs, wants, and help remind you of the friends you got them from |

I might be able to get a butterfly "bush"from my mum. They are not really bushes but a kind of perennial mallow that the bees and butterfly just love. The ones my mum has are pink.I am going to be house sitting this week and will check to see if there are any seedlings. (If I can get a start or a cutting off of her real butterfly bush I will do so.) I am going to be bring mostly indoor plants that mum had out all summer that went crazy as usual. I think there will be purple passion vine, spider plants, mini arrow head, philadendron, etc.... Also I am bring a couple of bags and a little box of hens and chicks. There will be at least me and one of my friends there. I have no clue as the food. Who knows since my cooking is usually a spur of the moment concoction/creation event. hope to see you all there. I have no been posting much because for some reason this site is not liking my computer much! LOL go figure. |

| I wish that I had posted here for the Home and Garden Show Swap. They didn't publicize it until the week before. Only six people showed up. I was on TV three times that weekend. I even got to do a segment with Tom McNutt! If all of you guys showed up then folks could have taken their least favorites to your swap! Oh well! Next year I'll post here if they do it again. Wish that I could join you al in Grove City. Now that I'm back in the working world Saturdays are no longer open days. ~~Mimi |

| I thought I had posted earlier but I don't see it. Jeanne, I sent you an email about this weekend. I also wanted to let those of you who are going that you are welcome to check out my list of seeds and if there is anything you would like, I can bring it with me for you. Just let me know by Thursday afternoon so I can do up requests that night. I will be working Friday and then going to the High School football game. In between, I will need to get things ready for the swap. I am leaving my house early so I can get to my son's in time. Looking forward to getting to know everyone. Sorry I won't be able to meet you Mimi. Margo |

Just got through planting most of what I got. What a great haul! Looking forward to next spring to see it all come back, hopefully! Thanks again, Michelle and James for the maidenhair. Collin is very excited. We'll have to see if Fire Island is big enough next spring to divide. It's one that hasn't increased in size much since we got it! Thanks, Jeanne and Mary Dawn for hosting. My whole family had a nice time. See you all in the spring! Stephanie |

| I want to thank everyone involved in making the swap possible. My daughter in law and I had a good time. This was our first swap and we were both so pleased with everything we brought back. The two of us looked a sight yesterday planting her stuff in her yard. The rain was coming down and we were out there in it planting away. In addition to the plants she chose, she had some bulbs she had bought and she wasn't sure where to put them. She is a new gardener in training. :) I was only there til this morning so we had to get it done yesterday. I did get home this morning and after a nice nap, hubby and I planted all my loot including a huge lot of pampass grass we put along the top of a small hill around our pond. Thanks to whoever brought it as I have been resisting spending money to get this. We are hoping it all comes back next year. It was nice to meet everyone and we are both looking forward to the next swap in the spring. Margo |
