Hi Diane...this will be great fun. I will be attending. Actually, I hurt my foot and have been 'banned' from walking on grass until it heals.(does this doctor know how that affects a gardener!!??) Hopefully, I'll be all better by then or- if I break the rule - that will be the day.

I'll have Murray dig some things up. For sure, I've got some oat grass.

Should be fun. Thanks, Diane!

Take care....Beverly

RE: columbus ohio plant swap/potluck sept 17, 2006 fall 2nd

I'm bringing spring and summer sown plants and my famous apple/walnut/feta salad! Thanks for hosting this.

BTW Ohio State plays Cincinnati at home that day. I don't know the time yet - I might have tickets and would go to the game.

RE: columbus ohio plant swap/potluck sept 17, 2006 fall 2nd

Thanks Diane for organizing the Fall Exchange. We have our reservations made and plan to attend. Not sure what plants will be coming with us at this time. I am sure the time will go fast.
Bakemon, we remember years ago when we lived in Upper Arlington when Ohio State had a home game that it was a big event. I am sure it is that way now. It will be nice to experience that again.
Beverly, we have everything set for coming down and can't wait for Friday evening dinner. Betty

Hi Diane! Thanks again for organizing the fall swap.

I'll be there! I know I'll be bringing a shasta daisy since I've already potted it up! Of course I'll bring something Italian in the crockpot too.

Don't worry Beverly. I'll help Murray dig for you...unless I'm digging up everything because I'm moving! Oy vey!

See everyone there!

Should be Fun!

RE: columbus ohio plant swap/potluck sept 17, 2006 fall 2nd

Hello,
Finally got it posted on garden-web. Hope you gardeners have not been waiting to long. I wasn't sure on how to do it.
How is everyone garden done this summer. I' seen japanese beetles aready. My iris didnot do to well this year. But my daylily are going to town. I'm working on labeling the plant as they bloom for some trades. I'm digging up one raise flower bed for more iris. I will have lot of purle hollyhocks.
I have joined Columbus iris society. There sale is this Sat. at north market 8am - 2pm. Iris are 2 or 3 dollars all labeled. I went to do Jody house Sunday (she will be at north market sale) she has 800 different kinds of iris!! I found they have mimiature iris.. They are also going to have a sale in Dayton, Ohio soon. It takes alot of time for garden society to dig, clean, mark & trim there plants for sale. We I like about the society sale is the variety of plants they have. Plants are usually divided by color.
I went to the Rose festival in clintonville, ohio a while back. It was the first time I have been there. They had about 50 tent with garden clubs selling there plants, garden things, education, & entertainment. I will go again. Parking is a problem I got a new wagon & will take it to the festival due to parking problems. I bought alot of plants very reasonable.
My asthma has been bad this year-several batches of predison. Beverly hope your foot is OK.
I also have this on Dave's garden.com/form..You can get on it for a while for free then it, closes. I have several people interested already. Check it out.
This year I'm interested in woodland plants especially shade. Also I love Corydalis (bleeding heart). I haven't found to many places to buy them. I got yellow from the spring swap & love it.
I need to work on my trade & wish list. I also trades plants with co-worker this spring. I just showed them my list & they tell me what they had to trade. I really love getting free plants form friends, you can think of them later everytime you look at them.
Happy gardening cottage bloom diane

RE: columbus ohio plant swap/potluck sept 17, 2006 fall 2nd

Diane, thanks for hosting the Fall swap! I will be there but I don't know yet what I'm bringing. I will probably have some daylilies, phlox, veronica, catmint and balloon flowers. And I'll probably be bringing something chocolately for dessert. I made 7 layer bars last time and seemed popular so I might make those again. Technically mine are 6 layer bars because I don't put nuts on mine.

See you all soon!

RE: columbus ohio plant swap/potluck date confusion

I just noticed that the subject line for the posting says the swap is the 17th (sunday) but the details of the post say it is Saturday the 16th. Based on the everyone's responses, I assume Saturday the 16th is the correct day?

RE: columbus ohio plant swap/potluck sept 17, 2006 fall 2nd

Hi Diane...there's no way to change it. I think you've made it clear by stating the correction. Maybe put blurb about the swap at the Ohio Valley forum too, with the 16th as the date and a link to this thread. Do you know how to do that?

Good gardening...Beverly

 o
RE: columbus ohio plant swap/potluck sept 17, 2006 fall 2nd

Hi Diane...another thought is to start a new thread here at the Get-togethers forum with the correct date in the Subject heading.

Just a thought.

 o
RE: columbus ohio plant swap/potluck sept 17, 2006 fall 2nd

Beverly, here's a vote for your cuke salad. There's nothing like a cuke salad that screams summer! And of course, we all love Mimi's Italian cavatini!

I'm trying to think of a way to keep those yellow jackets away from the food. Any ideas?

Betty, Ohio State season here in UA is crazy. The last away game of the season our neighbors get a parade permit and block off a culdesac(sp). We then truck in the two story Hineygate TV and line up grills and tents and have a huge outdoor party. We have several hundred people and channel 4 goes live from our party early that morning. It takes about 2 days to recover. I find clothing and personal effects every year in my front yard. Eventually all the vehicles are claimed.

 o
RE: columbus ohio plant swap/potluck sept 17, 2006 fall 2nd

Bakemom..you're right - the yellow jackets are awful! Do you suppose if we brought some traps we'd attract more than we'd get anyway. Hey - maybe some big bowls of jello just for the yellow jackets!

 o
RE: columbus ohio plant swap/potluck sept 17, 2006 fall 2nd

Diane -
Thanks for organizing this swap! I'm fairly new to the group so look forward to getting to know folks at the swap.

I will be bringing daylilies and iris which will be in pots far ahead of time to avoid the freeze date planting problem.

I may also have some hosta and geraniums.

I'll bring my apple walnut cake.

Got your note -- I can help out at the sign-in table from 10-11am that morning. Thanks! Abbie

RE: columbus ohio plant swap/potluck sept 17, 2006 fall 2nd

Diane,

Sorry it took me so long getting around to saying I was coming. My intention has always been to come, but things got in the way. Then my computer crashed and it was a two weeks before I got it back from the computer hospital. So, sorry. I just got it back yesterday.

I'll be there with bells on! I'll bring some daylilies for sure and maybe some hostas. In terms of food I haven't decided yet. It might be cool, so maybe some chilly.

I will bring my friend Dick, if he doesn't have to work. He has lots of daylilies to bring. Same goes for my husband.

I thought I should give an update on some of the things I got at the fall swap last year. Who ever brought the Sarcred Lily--It's very happy in the shade with the hostas. Also, I got two starts of Campanula Latiloba, which have been beautiful! It started in late May or early June and has been blooming ever since. I was afraid it would run all over the place, but then I looked it up and it is supposed to be clump forming. So, that made me even happier with it. Also, I got some groundcover Veronica from Beverly, which is doing very well too. I'm sure there are other things I got, but I can't remember for sure if they came from the fall swap. But, Thanks Everybody!!!!!

Trish

Well Hello Everyone,
I'm a little slow at getting started on the thread, But I'm sure glad to see it's up and going.I have lots of plants I want to bring, But like Princess Mimi says,Too hot to get out there and get them potted up.
It will be nice to see everyone again.Seems like we couldn't wait for Spring and Summer to get here and it felt like it took forever to do so. Now I can't wait for fall to get here and cool things down a bit. Never mind Winter.
Sue and I will be coming to the fall swap this year,This will be her first time for the fall swap. I know she will love it as much as I have. And Look forward to it as much as the spring swap.Plants or no plants,Seeing everyone and munching on good food and having the door prizes is the best. The plants are just a Wonderfull BONUS!!
Mimi, We'll have to stop by and check out your refurbished cabinets.Sounds like a lot of work.
Does any one have any special requests for plants?
I'm hoping whoever brought the Scooter Hosta to the spring swap will think of me and will be able to bring a start for me. I will gladly trade for whatever you'd like even if I have to go buy it.LOL, My Mini Pen's name is Scooter. And I thought it was so cool my sweet Mini Pen has a Hosta with his name.I mean come on,How many of us have Hostas with the same name as ours, Let alone our pets???!!!!
Look forward to seeing you all soon.

Granny 57 - I am so happy you wrote. You brought me some hostas for the spring exchange and I owe you some. I do have Scooter and will bring a start for you. If I have two you can give one for your friend. I also have been planning on bring you some mini hostas, so if you have some on your list let me know. The plants you gave me are all doing great.
Hope to see you at the exchange. Betty

RE: columbus ohio plant swap/potluck sept 17, 2006 fall 2nd

I hope to come and will probably bring glass. Nothing specific in mind yet. the studio is closed for the summer but should reopen around the first of Sept which will give me a little time. Sometimes it reopens late and if that happens I will have very little time. I am especially interested in bulbs (or rhizomes etc.) of shade plants need to be as deerproof as possible.

RE: columbus ohio plant swap/potluck sept 17, 2006 fall 2nd

Glad to see more folks posting! Sounds like a great gathering.

Bakemom, are you going to be able to make it? When is the OSU game that day?

I am going to let Murray (or Mimi -she offered to help, too) dig up some grasses, salvia, sedums, and a few others. I am still banned from walking on the grass and gardening because my foot is healing. I haven't done any gardening all summer...lots of gazing, though. It will be fun to see folks.

RE: columbus ohio plant swap/potluck sept 17, 2006 fall 2nd

I doubt whether anyone has extras of this one, because it might be a newer cultivar, but again, who knows, if I don't ask? I have a powerful want for the hosta called Hanky Panky. Soooooooo pretty. I'm pretty sure I'm going to bring about six fairly big blue muffin viburnum shrubs (want to replace with rugosa roses), coreopsis, violet mums, pearl yarrow, raspberries, rhubarb and whatever Karen and Gene bring. And of course.... food! Should be fun!

Storygardener,
If I could help you in your quest to get your swap trades ready--I surely would.I know how frustrating it is not to be able to do or get things done because of non functioning body parts. But it sounds like you have the best helpers in your dear sweet friend Mimi,And your dear sweet hubby Murray.Hopefully next year will be better for all of us.Hope your better by the time we see you at the swap.If your not able to get anymore of the Stinking Helebore please don't worry about it.
If you need help with the swap, I will do what I can to help out.

Sunburygirl,
If I had Hanky Panky I would give you a start. I have been to many places looking for that special Hosta and found many, But I have not come across the Hanky Panky Hosta, And it is very beautiful.I will try to see what I can find out,Who knows--Maybe it's closer then we think.
Good Luck!!!

 o
RE: columbus ohio plant swap/potluck sept 17, 2006 fall 2nd

Sunburygirl,
We do not have Hanky Panky as of now but according to the Hosta Finder it is a newer one that came on the market around 2004. The average price in 2006 is $29.50 and the hybridizer - H. Hansen/Shady Oaks. The nurseries carry it are: Bent Tree, Conner, Flying Frog, Glenbrook, Global, Jim's, Naylor Creek, and Plant Delights.
We usually find that after a few years the price is more reasonable and more nurseries carry the plant.
I do agree it is a beautiful plant, and we are waiting for the price to go down. Are you bringing hostas to the exchange? We might dig a few mini's as the bed is getting a little crowded. Betty

 o
RE: columbus ohio plant swap/potluck sept 17, 2006 fall 2nd

Hi everyone! I agree that Hanky Panky is one of those hosta that I'll have to wait on! Betty, I might bring a couple of hosta, but I don't have a name for them. They're pretty and well behaved and look similiar to the one below with dark blue green leaves, rimmed in white. I'd love to bring some grasses, but I don't have a handy backhoe to dig them out with! Almost killed myself trying to cut off small hunks this past spring! Like digging up oak trees for fun!

Here is a link that might be useful: similiar hosta in looks

RE: columbus ohio plant swap/potluck sept 17, 2006 fall 2nd

I'd really better get going! I let my one potted Shasta daisy die from lack of water and have done NOTHING in the garden for three weeks! The boys go back to school on Wednesday and Lee is off work for the rest of the week so I think that I may get some digging then.

Can''t wait to see everyone~

I love it...folks are gabbing about the fall swap...YAY! I'll try and bring the stinking hellebore this fall, Granny - or for sure, in the spring.

It's so much fun that Betty and Ron are coming down from Michigan. Love it!!

Mimi...I've haven't seen you as much in the yard this summer 'cause I haven't been there!!!! Boo hoo!

Sounds like we are going to have a good variety of plants. GREAT!

Hagey,
I've been thinking and now mind you I don't feel that you owe me anything,But your offer was so sweet and I'm such a crazy person when it comes to Hostas,That I'm so honored and pleased when I'm offered Hostas as a kind jesture it takes me aback.I hope you didn't take anything I posted as being rude.I would never say or do anything to hurt yours or anyone elses feelings.I've been getting into trouble lately because of how I say or do things and never thinking it could be taken any other way then how I mean it. My apologies if I posted any thing hurtful. You asked if I have any Hosta in mind and I have been looking for the Hosta called Mouse Ears and Mildred Seaver and Galaxy.Have any ideas on those? I know a lot of people are interested in Mouse Ears and is probably hard to get or find.Just thought I'd put that out there.I love all kinds of the Hosta plants and never refuse any offers. And your feed back on the Hanky Panky is awesome. Your very knowledgeable when it comes to your Hostas.I'm hoping someday I will be as well. What is the Hosta Finder?A book or newsletter or web site? It will be good to see you again!
Be seeing you soon.
My Grandson is here to help me pot up some plants for the swap. How wonderful is that?

RE: columbus ohio plant swap/potluck sept 17, 2006 fall 2nd

Granny57,
I can't recall you saying anything to me that was rude. You asked about the Hosta Finder. It is a 169 page 12th edition 2006 book with retail source list for hostas with info on all hostas that are on the market. We like it as we can see where you can purchase and what the average price of each plant. The book usually comes out in March and you order it from Steven Green in Sudbury, MA.at 15.00 a book.
You mentioned Blue Mouse Ears and we do have that but I did two divides on that this spring for trades and we have only one start now. Sorry or I would share. We do have Mildred Seaver but I am not sure what that looks like at this time. We do not like to divide the big ones in the fall as they do not do as well wintering over.
Per the Hosta Finder:
Blue Mouse Ears - Hibridizer E & J Deckert, yr. 2000, 5 inches tall, blue green, Avg price 16.66.
Mildred Seaver - Hibridizer K. Vaugh, yr. 1981, edge variegation, Avg price 9.76.
I will let you know what I will be bringing when it is closer to the time.
We had to pot up 169 pots of perennials for five homes that the city had remodled for low income families. They asked the Garden Project where we volunteer in the flower Demo Garden. This week with school starting and some of our volunteers getting ready to go back to teach we did not have any volunteers to help us. We have been busy and on top of that it has been hot with no rain so it is water every day. Not much time for our own yard.
Time is going fast and I will let you know what I find to bring. Betty

RE: columbus ohio plant swap/potluck sept 17, 2006 fall 2nd

Hagey,
Good to know I didn't say anything rude and,
Thanks for the info on the Hostas and the Hosta book finder. It sounds like something I'd be interested in having for myself and sharing with friends.Potting up 169 plants seems like a lot of work. What kind of plants were you doing?Common everyday plants and do you need some extras to help out?I have so much ground covers(Ajuga and Sedums,Coneflowers and Bronze Fennel,Laminums,Saint Johns Wort.I wouldn't mind donating any thing you think the projects your working for would want. Just let me know.

Goodness Betty!!! You and Ron have been really busy with all that potting. We haven't had much rain here in Columbus, either.

We are getting closer to the fun day.

Bakemom...are you attending the swap this fall - or will OSU football reign supreme that day?

Granny - it's so nice to have your grandsons help. Mimi's boys help me in my garden, espcially Isaac. He love the plants, too (like his Mama).

Diane - I am anxious to see if the cukes keep the bees away. That will be great.

RE: columbus ohio plant swap/potluck sept 17, 2006 fall 2nd

Diane, I would love either plants or seeds to that burgundy lychnis. I waited too long and didn't get a chance to snatch some seed from the wildflower garden. Whoever is in charge of that mowed it over.

I'm not sure about the OSU/Cincinnati game. I don't know if I have tickets or what time it is. Regardless, I would like to send over some pink platycodon for giveaways.

RE: columbus ohio plant swap/potluck sept 17, 2006 fall 2nd

This will seem like a strange post, but you are the only community of gardeners I've found so far after googling "community gardners" and "Columbus garnders" for quite a while!
I'm a bride getting married in a few weeks, and really don't have the money for flowers for the wedding (they're SO expensive! YIKES!). My fiance has just come home from Iraq working for a relief and development company, and we really are having just the simplest wedding short of going to city hall and getting married that way. We were fortunuate enough to get our church for just $50! (woo hoo!), my friend gave me my dress for free AND paid to have it altered to fit me...suffice to say all sorts of great things have been happening to us leading up to the wedding, but flowers are still out of reach.

Someone mentioned perhaps contacting a group of local gardeners to see if they might be willling to have us/help us prune through their roses or other flowers. Obviously, I know that gardeners don't GROW their flowers just to have them clipped away, but maybe there is someone out there who would be interested in this?

Our colors are ivorys, browns, burnt oranges, tans, with accents of bright greens, and fuscia (basically bright fall colors)...

I couldn't offer much in return - maybe an invite to the wedding (you'd end up with some sweet tasty cake out that!); I can do newsletters or graphic design work if any of you are looking for that sort thing. If you ARE interested or know someone who is, please email me at brideflowerseeker@gmail.com, or simply reply here.

Thank you!

RE: columbus ohio plant swap/potluck sept 17, 2006 fall 2nd

Recently I did an on site swap with another GardenWeb person, Cathy. She told me how nice this swap was and how much she enjoyed meeting everyone. I have been potting up plants and I would love to come. I will bring something for PotLuck, and try to find something for a door prize. I will be bringing a non-gardening friend with me. It will be interesting to meet all of you. IF possible I would like to do some special trades for hostas, or pulmonaria and heucheras I don't have. You can check my trade list for the plants I have, Thanks Twila
I have to trade most of which are one eye plants.
Whirlwind
Fire and Ice
Orange Marmalade

Herifu
Opipara Koriyama
Blue Monday
Golden Tiara
Venusta
Lemon Lime

Hi Keets! Welcome to the Swap talk! I hope you can come because I've never been to a bad swap yet. It's fun to meet folks, eat and... oh yeah... trade plants. From your trade list, I'd say you have an awesome hosta and daylily collection so anything you bring would be neat. Whirlwind is my current favorite of the ones you listed. Mine are still babies, but so pretty and the adults are wonderful. Gypsy Rose is another one I recently splurged on that I love. Looks kind of like a watercolor. Hopefully by next year I can divide it for more.

Here is a link that might be useful: Picture of Gypsy Rose

I would love to come to the swap. Do I need to rsvp to anywhere other than by posting this message? Also, what is a good number of plants to bring, 10, 20, 30 or more?
I have hostas, herbs and probably some daylillies to bring.
Look forward to meeting you all!

 o
RE: columbus ohio plant swap/potluck sept 17, 2006 fall 2nd

Thanks, you guys, I am looking forward to coming and meeting everyone. I have been potting up plants, I got a late start because I was on vacation for a few weeks. Now I just have to come up with something good to eat. I am also trying to get my sister's daughter-in-law to come with me. I am interested in hosta's and excited about what people will have. Can't Wait! Twila

 o
RE: columbus ohio plant swap/potluck sept 17, 2006 fall 2nd

Steph...you can bring as many plants as you have extra. The fun thing is that you get to take home as many as you bring! Some folks bring 5 and others bring 100. There seems to always be some left over, towards the end, for folks who brought only a few to take home more. Also, you don't need to RSVP anywhere else but here. I think Diane is keeping a mental count from the conversations here in this thread.

Keets - it always amazes me the variety of plants that end up at the swap!

Finally, some rain today......yay!

HI, all! It seems like forever since I have had time on the computer. Noah started back to school last week, hopefully things will get back to "normal", if there is such a thing. Guess I still have my "monkey", Naomi at home, who is into everything!
James, the kids, Mom, and I are planning on being there. Don't have a list yet, I haven't been doing much with this weather. I know it is strange for a gardener to say but all I want for my birthday is 30 degree weather and 3 feet of snow!
Better go get a few things done. Will try to post a list later of wants and trades.

 o
RE: columbus ohio plant swap/potluck sept 17, 2006 fall 2nd

Hi Michelle!!
Looks like you have a part of your wish. Not 30 degrees but cool enough to wear long sleeves. No snow but it's around the corner.Cool weather is great for digging up plants for the swap or anything else.I went to Lowes and found some ornamental Kale and Cabbage for $1.99 each in large pots and bought 7 of them.Every other year they have been $4.99 each in smaller pots.I guess they got tired of trashing them at the end of the season. They grow quite large and I have seen them in Feb,with snow on them and so beautiful.
I look every day to see who's posting,But I guess everyone's busy these days or just don't have much to say.
Any way great to see you post Michelle.Look forward to seeing you all soon!!

RE: columbus ohio plant swap/potluck sept 17, 2006 fall 2nd

Yeah right Granny. It's still not cool enough for anything but tanktops and shorts. At this rate I won't have long sleeves on until Dec. If you remember a few years ago at fall swap everyone was bundled up and I was in a tank top,if I remember correctly. Has to be decent weather for me, freezing for everyone else before I even think of breaking out the tshirts. LOL. Hopefully we will have nice weather for the swap. Looking forward to seeing everyone. RE: columbus ohio plant swap/potluck sept 17, 2006 fall 2nd

What are the guidelines for donating to the door prizes? Plants or plant and garden items? I found the cutest thing I pick up the other day, not a garden or plant item but it has flowers on it, would that be OK? My plants are ready to go and so am I. My sister may be coming but for sure her daughter-in-law is going to come with me.

 o
RE: columbus ohio plant swap/potluck sept 17, 2006 fall 2nd

I have a glue gun with a ton of sticks. We don't use them. Perhaps would someone like them for a door prize, or should I just bring them and someone pick them up for free? With this group I felt they would be useful for someone!

I have a ton of winter sown healthy plants I have nutured all summer. You guys will love them!

St. John's Wort Shrubs
Pink Platycodon
Succisa (just like purple scabiosa only bigger and fall blooming - just beautiful!).

Looking forward to it and Go Bucks!

RE: columbus ohio plant swap/potluck sept 17, 2006 fall 2nd

RE: columbus ohio plant swap/potluck sept 17, 2006 fall 2nd

Hi Granny and everyone!

I really didn't fall off the face of the earth! Life is just busy with the 5 'T' boys. Four went back to school last week but Lee was home on vacation for the two weeks preceding that. Sometimes it seem like he's more high maintainance than the kids!

I have a redtwig dogwood potted up and ready to go. Everything else is waiting for tomorrow. It will be just Sammo and me....finally!!!!!! I have some hanging plant brackets and other gardeny stuff to bring too. I'll be digging up Yarrows: Cerise Queen, Moonshine and Apple Blossom. Other than that I'll just have to look around and see what needs dividing.

Can't wait to see everyone!

Storygardener,
Great to hear from you and know your still around. It sounds like your a little bummed because your foot isn't healing as fast as you would like.I will pray for a faster healing .I wish I was able to help you with getting your swap plants ready.
Princess Mimi,
You must be in heaven ,Having all that time on your hands during the day.Bet in a way you kinda miss them a bit too.But at least your boys are doing better this year then last health wise. That's a blessing all in it's self.
Diane,
You sure have been a busy little gardener,Potting up 75 plants and looking for more to do!Bet your sore from all that digging. But it's worth it hun?!!!
It's really blah today,Hopefully I will feel like potting up some plants later.Maybe not 75 but who knows what I will get into! So much to do,So little time to do it in.
It will be great to see everyone again no matter what is being brought.
What kinds of goodies are we all thinking about bringing to munch on?
I'm thinking about making a Cheese Ball,Maybe some Fudge.Better go.See what I can get into.

RE: columbus ohio plant swap/potluck sept 17, 2006 fall 2nd

Hi all, I have a silly question...I've never been to a Swap or done any seed or plant trading...My Question...Are you potting up perennials, bulbs i don't know which ones are suppose to be potted? Suggestions, ideas? I guess this is a how to ?...What about some gardening photograghy framed?...I 'm hoping to be there this year...Very exciting to be with other garden enthusiasts...My fifth year gardening for me, and still a whole lot to learn...Thanks

 o
RE: columbus ohio plant swap/potluck sept 17, 2006 fall 2nd

Hi Granny! Today my friend, Mimi, came over and did some digging for me - for the swap!! She even dug up your hellebore foetitis. Thanks, buddy, Mimi. I am bummed with this foot..but, it will heal eventually. I have a bunch of Birds and Blooms magazine to bundle up to trade too. I'll have some things to trade.

Jaunital...there are no silly questions, really!! Usually we ask folks to present the plant or whatever well. If you can pot it up, that's good. Or, if it's a big big hunk you can put it in a plastic grocery bag with handles. If you have bulbs..you can put them loosely in cups (or recycled container like cottage cheese, etc.) Certain \plants are sometimes (but, not always) presented with roots or such showing...like daylilies or iris. Basically, present a plant the way you'd be happy receiving it.

Seeds..alot of times - folks just put their seeds out for folks just for sharing. I don't think this will be an actual seed exchange. Maybe Diane has a different idea...but, that's how she did it last year.

Garden photography would be lovely! You could put as a door prize or use for trading. There's an area when folks put non plant things for trading like old shovels, pots, extra crafts etc.

It's getting closer!.........Beverly

RE: columbus ohio plant swap/potluck sept 17, 2006 fall 2nd

Storygardener,
Isn't it great to have wonderful friends like you have in Mimi? If I didn't have such good friends and Grandchildren to help me with the yard and plants,I'd be in a real pickle.I never turn help down,I feed them a good snack or meal,And I'd clothe them if I had to.LOL!!
I have a nice large area to plant in now and and my friend Jane is coming over to help me tomorrow.
I will be going to a large plant sale this weekend where the sale is 25/50% off.Like I need more.
I'm behind on getting the plants ready, But it's cool enough that it won't really hurt them.
Heres to a healthy healing foot Bev!!!

RE: columbus ohio plant swap/potluck sept 17, 2006 fall 2nd

Would anyone be interested in any Bamboo?
I know it's supposed to be a scarry plant and all,I've had 2 different kinds for 6 years and they are just now starting to pop new shoots. They were both given to me without a name but I didn't care,It was a free gift. One is almost like a weeping Bamboo and the other is a straight up form and only 4 feet maybe 4/12 feet tall,But that could be because it's in pretty much shade.
Any one want to trade anything for it?Let me know,If you don't have anything to trade for and would like a start I will just let you have it.Now that's an offer you can't refuse!!Or maybe you can!!LOL I only have a start off of each,Because like I said"They have just started to pop new shoots.

I put together 6 bundles of gardening magazine (Birds & Blooms, Country Gardening, Garden Gate, etc - about 4 to a bundle) So, I'll be able to select about 10 things. That will be fun.

Granny...there's two kinds of bamboo - clumping and running. The one with runners is extremely invaisive. Sounds like you have a clumping bamboo.

RE: columbus ohio plant swap/potluck sept 17, 2006 fall 2nd

Hi Diane,

I'm finally going to make an Ohio Swap, thanks for scheduling it this fall. I've only been to one years ago and it was a great time. I will be bringing a friend so count us in as (2). We will be bringing a little of everything. I will have a couple of toadlillys for you shade/woodland lovers.

Nancy, hummm, you have rhubbarb? I've been thinking about adding it to my vegy patch. Hope I'll be lucky enough to get some.

Now I've got to see this hosta, hanky panky, and what all the hipe is about.

Not sure what I'm bringing but it will more than likely have chocolate in it!

See you soon. Linda & Mary Jo

 o
RE: columbus ohio plant swap/potluck sept 17, 2006 fall 2nd

Storygardener,
Thanks for the info, I'm not sure which one is which though. They both have starts or shoots that have popped up away from the original plant. Is that still considered a clump form?

 o
RE: columbus ohio plant swap/potluck sept 17, 2006 fall 2nd

Granny...in the clumping form, the plant's new shoots come up right next to and near the original plant. If it's coming up away from the main plant, it might be a running bamboo.

Folks...I spoke with Betty (Hagey) today. They'll be down from Michigan for sure. Yippeee!!

Beverly

 o
RE: columbus ohio plant swap/potluck sept 17, 2006 fall 2nd

Ohio homegrown I would love toadlilys or any other woodland plants. Send me your want list. dianemgarrett@yahoo.com thanks

 o
RE: columbus ohio plant swap/potluck sept 17, 2006 fall 2nd

Hi Juanitel! Come to the swap and bring whatever you have. Potted perennials, bulbs, even photography. Everything always seems to find a home!

Ohio Homegrown, I'll try to dig you up one of my rhubarb plants. Honestly, one is probably all you'll need since they grow stalks with abandon.

Karen and Jodie, sweeties that they are, came up last night and helped me dig plants. Digging up the six Blue Muffin Viburnum almost killed us, but we won!

Has any got a small TV to bring? That way the OSU fanatics would have something to crowd around for the pre-game, etc.

 o
RE: columbus ohio plant swap/potluck sept 17, 2006 fall 2nd

I love it Sunbury girl...a true Buckeye fan. We could bring a TV because there's electrical hookup!

Today Murray dug up some more plants - some pretty greenish blue groundcover sedum with yellow flowers, a black eyed susie and some oat grass.

So I've got:
oat grass
black eyed susan
sedum
becky shasta daisey
1 tripteris coreopsis (prairie/wildflower - 6ft tall)
bundles of magazines
a door prize

Should be fun!!!

The six day forcast says a nice day, too!

Hi everybody! Mom has already talked to Diane, but I just wanted to post on here and RSVP for the two of us. Haven't been on GW too much lately, I'm redoing a corner of the garden and the weather's been so good the last week I've gotten a lot done. Now I've got a little room for a few new things! :)

Thanks so much for hosting the swap, Diane. See you all soon!

 o
RE: columbus ohio plant swap/potluck sept 17, 2006 fall 2nd

Yippee - I am so glad that Jeanne is coming with her Mama!

My neighbors, Shelly & her daughter, are coming to the swap. She may not be able to get there until right before 1pm. I told her to leave enough time to see all the plants before the swappin' starts!

RE: columbus ohio plant swap/potluck sept 17, 2006 fall 2nd

Sunbury girl, We've been looking for a good rubarb for years. If you have another we would love it. We just can't seem to find one that grows like our Grandfathers' plants did. I am also looking for the orange echinacha if anyone has any. Looking forward to Sat. Probably won't have as many plants as we have in the past since it has been a hectic couple of weeks around here. See everyone soon. M

 o
RE: columbus ohio plant swap/potluck sept 17, 2006 fall 2nd

Hi everyone! It's so fun to hear what eveyone is bringing! I got sick this weekend (so did 3 of the boys) so the 'Green Eyes Wink" Hemerocallis that I plan on bringing will be in bags. One of the reasons that I love Daylillies is that they are so easy going. I don't know how many there will be until I get them out of the ground. If it doesn't rain too hard tomorrow I should be able to dig them up then.

I have the pasta that I'll use for the Italian dish I'm bringing. Should be a fun and yummy occaision!

See y'all soon!

~~Mimi

RE: columbus ohio plant swap/potluck sept 17, 2006 fall 2nd

The time has gone so fast and here we are ready for the swap. I just finished potting up 50 plants to bring beside some personal trades. Unless I run across something else I need to dig out.
This is what we found that needs a new home:
Asarum
Campanula - Cherry Bells
Celandine Poppy
Columbine
Corydalis
Cranesbill Geranium
Hardy Ageratum
Hardy Strawberry Begonia
Jacob's Ladder
Goat's Beard
Meadowsweet
Pulmonaria
I hope someone likes them and gives them a good home.
See you all Saturday.

 o
RE: columbus ohio plant swap/potluck sept 17, 2006 fall 2nd

So far I have potted up:
Shasta Daisies
Purple Coneflowers
(1) Hydrangea - pink
Toad Lillies

Tomorrow I hope to pot up:
Lilly of the Valley
Sweet Autumn Clematis
(1) Oat Grass

I've got lots of gorgeous double salmon poppie seeds, if anyone would like to see a pic of them, send me your email address. I winter sowed in a 5'x10' raised bed and it almost completely filled with these poppies. I will package up if there is a big interest in them. lsbanks@columbus.rr.com

Sunbury girl..good ideal, GO BUCKS! and bring on the TV. And thanks for bringing a rhubbarb for me!

Diane, I don't have a trade list but I could use some orange in my garden and I will save you a toad or two in any case.

Ready to finish packing. Will be coming in sometime tonight. I think I'm going to make a squash (out of our garden)dish or two. Always trying something new with the garden veggies. James has some swaps together, not as many as in the past but we don't only come for the plants. Looking forward to seeing all our garden friends. Looks like they are predicting good weather, hope the forcast holds. See you tomorrow. M

I've got my plants labeled & the magazines bundled. I am going to make my Thai cold noodle peanut salad. While I don't have as many plants as usual and won't take home very many....I am really excited to see swap and gardening friends.

Remember folks....the swap is SATURDAY, September 16 (not 17 like it says in the heading - that was an accidental error)

See you soon.........Beverly

Any interest in this big schefflera? It's a tough as nails veteran -- at least 12-14 years old. I've been told it needs to go, doesn't fit our new decor at work, and it's too big to take home.

Sure would like to find this big guy a nice home....

Thanks for a great time and GO BUCKS! Things started looking "normal" for the Buckeyes after I got home. I didn't think I would want much, but there were some nice little goodies I could not resist and a few items that I took for friends.

Here is the Apple Salad Recipe: note: I did use more onion and garlic than I usually do. And, I drenched the apples in fresh squeezed lemon juice for another zip.

Apple-Feta Tossed Salad
2 T. margarine
1 cup walnut halves
1 T. sugar
1/8 tsp. pepper
5 cups torn romaine
5 cups torn red leaf lettuce
1 green and 1 red apple - chopped (toss in lemon juice)
1 cup feta cheese

Dressing:
6 T. olive oil
2 T. white wine vinegar
2 T. chopped onion
1 1/2 tsp. Dijon mustard
2 chopped garlic cloves
1/2 tsp sugar
1/4 tsp. dried oregano
1/8 tsp. salt
1/8 tsp dried parsley flakes
1/8 tsp. pepper
In skillet, melt margarine over medium heat. Add the walnuts, sprinkle with sugar and pepper. Stir to coat and bake on a cookie sheet at 350 for 15 minutes. Stir every five minutes and remove from sheet to cool.
In a large bowl, combine lettuces, apples and feta cheese. Combine the dressing ingredients and blend. Drizzle over salad and toss to coat. Top with sugared walnuts
12 servings -

RE: columbus ohio plant swap/potluck sept 17, 2006 fall 2nd

What a fun day!! It was terrific to see so many long time swap friends. Amazing...these swaps have been going on since 2001! Since I hadn't been on the grass all summer, it was a super wonderful time for me running around. The old foot survived. Yay!

I got some wonderful daylilies, heuchera, veronica, balloon flower and more. Thanks to everyone that comes with some a kind and generous spirit.

The food....gardeners sure can cook. Yum. Another wonderful potlock.

A BIG thank you to Diane for putting on the swap this fall. It was really terrific. We all appreciate your efforts to make this day possible. I hope you got enough donations to cover your costs!

I look forward to "seeing" you folks at the Gardenweb and next spring at the park in Hilliard for the spring swap.

Thanks, again Diane!!!!

Beverly, the storygardener

RE: columbus ohio plant swap/potluck sept 17, 2006 fall 2nd

What a great day!

Thank you Diane for putting it all together. I really appreciate the opportunity to be a "civilian"! I also appreciate your letting me take some extras for the courtyard at Memorial Middle School. I know that the 'Blue Muffin' Viburnum will be a great backdrop for the day lillies.

It was so great to see everyone from previous swaps and to get to know the new folks. I also got to know Linda and Lisa as gardeners outside of our usual friendship.

Granny you are too kind! Lee apologizes for not being able to be there to help load your plants. He promises to come in the Spring!

I can't begin to name everyone who brightened up my life today. I just wanted to let you all know how much I enjoyed it.

See you in May!

~~Mimi

RE: columbus ohio plant swap/potluck sept 17, 2006 fall 2nd

Hey all...some of you expressed interest in winter sowing. All my plants this year for the fall were winter sown and were just beautiful and healthy. If you are interested, please email me, or better yet, post on the Winter Sowing Forum.

Tell them Bakemom sent you. See what happens.

BTW, you will likely get all the seeds you need plus more for postage from our Winter Sowing exchange and the Main Exchange. Winter sowing works GREAT in Ohio!

RE: columbus ohio plant swap/potluck sept 17, 2006 fall 2nd

Diane, it was a wonderful first swap. I'm hooked! THANK YOU. I enjoyed meeting everyone and hope I am back from Fla. in time to come to the spring one, if not I put my doorprize (forgot to bring, left it in the car where I would not forget it) back for the fall. Thanks so much Margie for the private trade, I loved everything. Cathy, it was good to see you and meet your husband, also thanks for the heads-up on how great this plant swap is, you were right. I got some great plants and beautiful glassware. I was able to get some of the magnificent glassware for my sister who was unable to come. She takes care of her invalid husband. She was delighted with it, wants more. Hopefully next time she can come too. Wish I had known about the Seeleys sale but there is always next fall. Great food and loads of it. I will try to bake two batches of Pecan Cookies next time. Twila

RE: columbus ohio plant swap/potluck sept 17, 2006 fall 2nd

Thanks Diane for all the hard work hosting the Fall Exchange. We had a great time and came home with some lovely plants.
You wanted to know about Cory's. We usually only go in the spring when we come down to the exchange. I think they have a good selection and good prices. They carry other shade plants and some sun plants beside the hostas. I will give you the details below:
Cory's Wildflower Gardens
1461 Valley Dr.
Chillicothe, OH 45601-1004
740-774-1771
robcory@adelphia.net
Tell them Ron & Betty sent you to one of the best hosta places. They are great people.
Beverly, your Tellima Fringecup was still setting on the porch when we got home. Sorry but will give it to you later or next year.
Thanks everyone for our lovely plants.
Thanks Noah for the beautiful picture and note. Naomi you are such a sweetie and growing up too fast. We will have to think of something for next spring exchange.
Margie what did you buy at Seeley's? Your car was packed before you came with your first stop at the sales. We did not stop at Seeley's as we were anxious to get home.
Thanks again Diane and everyone else. Ron & Betty

Hi all -
SO sorry I missed the swap. I was feeling ill and just couldn't get there. Pity since I had already potted up all my swap plants! (even had a little door prize ready. Sigh...)

Sounds like I missed a great time! (Going to check out Seeley's. Have a few hostas on my "wish list")

Bye for now - Abbie

Granny, Steph98 and Mimi, I will be emailing you shortly about promised Poppy Seeds.

Diane, I will email you about Toad Lillies, maybe we can work something out.

Thank you so much, Diane for organizing a great swap! We all had a great time, ate way too much good food, got to talk to many gardners and took home some great plants. The weather was great and Buddy, the mini dog had the time of his life working the crowd and playing with his dog friends. Great time!

RE: columbus ohio plant swap/potluck sept 17, 2006 fall 2nd

Linda and Abbie...I was wondering where you were. Sorry you couldn't make it to the swap. I hope you can come to spring swap.

Murray planted all but two of my plants into the ground.

Granny...you got some nice hostas at Seeleys. Those along with your other garden center plants and swap plants. WOW..you were loaded with plants. Did you end up going to Darby Creek Nursery that day too?

I am going to Michigan one weekend soon. Our friend, Betty (Hagey) invited to go to a swap there. What fun! It will be fun just getting to see Betty and Ron. Plants will be a bonus and Murray won't mind planting them.

Pretty soon...I'll be getting ready for winter sowing.

Enjoy fall all.......Beverly

RE: columbus ohio plant swap/potluck sept 17, 2006 fall 2nd

Hi Beverly,
To answer your Q?, I did go to Darby Creek Nursery,me and my friends went there after the swap. But they didn't have a good sale like they did last fall.We left there almost empty handed. But we had stopped at Shroders off of 71 on our way to the swap and before we got to the swap. They have some really good sales on their plants. That's where we bought most of our plants that day. On our way home we stopped at Seely's. I ended up buying 4 Hostas and Jacquie and her sister Bobbi bought 4 or 5. And we were loaded for bear.LOL I was in so much pain I couldn't hardly stand it. But It was fun.I couldn't unload my car and lucky for me I have some very able friends who don't mind helping or doing for me.Oh!! If I only Had My Legs Back!!!
What's this Beverly about you having a Hosta Sale on the 30th? Did you sell them for a business or are they your own??Diane had emailed me with the info and date, But I didn't get the message till after the day of your sale.
Sorry I missed it. Hope you did a good business!!! Hope you and Betty had fun at the swap.Fill us in on the Goodies you brought home!!
Keep in touch!!

The swap with Betty is this weekend. I'll let you know.

I am glad you had fun getting all your new plants!

Beverly,
You know I should have known Diane wasn't talking about you, It didn't occur to me she wasn't because of the way the email read she sent to me.I guess she thought I knew this other Bev,Not realizing I only Knew The One And Only!
That would be you.LOL.But I got you goin Hun??Wondering what the bleep I was goin on about!!!LOL
I will keep in touch and keep tabs on how your getting along.I hope by next spring you'll be bouncing around with the best of'em.

RE: columbus ohio plant swap/potluck sept 17, 2006 fall 2nd

Hi Bakemom,
I have been trying to post on the winter sowing thread and for some reason I can't. I wanted to ask about the Gaillardia seeds you were offering. I'm interested in any you may have left and would like to try my hand at winter sowing for my first time. If your interested in anything, Let me know and I will be sure to try to find it for you. I just need a little info on how to go about it and when I should start. Also I have a Q?? for you. The annual Gaillardia I bought this year called Fanfare has seed heads on it and is still blooming if you can beleive that. Do you think it will ressed it's self? I took some seed heads off and threw some of them back in the ground were they are still blooming and I will keep some for spring just in case.
I hope I can post this message.
Talk at you soon.
