Staunted geraniums after over-wintering

Begonia2005

Before cold weather set in last year, I cut my geraniums down to almost a stump, I took then to the basement (in fact, garage) and left them in a cool, dark place for over-wintering. I watered only once or twice with very little water. With such a treatment, you would think any flower would die - but since this is what I read about over-wintering, this is what I did.

Well, I took them out when Spring came but a couple of them are clearly staunted. They did not die, they now have a few green leaves and new growth coming out but they are thin, very small and they are not growing.

What did I do wrong?
