Should I buy Zonal or Seed geraniums

| Hello...I love geraniums...but am always confused in the Spring when I buy them about which type-zonal or seed...is better. Or doesn't it matter? I live in zone 5, do not over-winter anything, but just want profuse blooms all summer. Any advice about the best type of fertilizer to use? Thanks |

| A zonal Geranium is actually a type of species or hybrid. The earlier ones used to be (and in many cases, still are) marked on the leaves. Seed Geraniums are simply plants grown from seed instead of cuttings. They are both fine and there is no difference except in price sometimes. For fertilizer, I use whatever I have on hand. Anything for flowers and vegetables is fine. Dave

I see you are in Zone 5. I am too, the Kansas City area. Here we get "bud worms" that ruin our Geraniums in July. But I have noticed the bud worms don't attack my ivy geraniums just the seed or Zonal geraniums. You might take that into consideration when choosing if the bud worms are a problem in your area. Just this morning I bought hanging baskets of ivy geraniums at W-M for $10 each and there are 4 ivy geraniums in each basket, a bargain for ivy types! Last week I paid $4 each at a nursery. | I prefer zonal geraniums. Seed geraniums have smaller and less blossoms.They are cheaper, but I guess we get what we pay for. |

I've been hunting for Ivy Geraniums, particularly variegated forever.
A few years ago, they were sold in annual hanging baskets along with other plants.
Does anyone know whre Ivy Geraniums are sold? Thanks, Toni |
