Pelargonium question

I have a very tall, almost 4 feet, pelargonium that someone gave me a couple of years ago. It looks like a regular red pelargonium flower, except smaller than the hybrids. She said it was a "tree geranium". It has very brittle stems that have to be staked, but can be standardized this way. Otherwise, it just looks like a leggy bush that sprawls. I tied several stems together to make a sturdier stalk, thinking they would grow into each other, but they didn't. I have to keep them tied and staked.

I like it for conversation value, because everyone is always surprised at how tall it is, but to my recollection, the red species pelargoniums all grow tall, but are hybridized to be shorter, not to mention they are sprayed with growth retardant.

I know I won't get a name here, but I'd like to know if anyone else can say that this is probably a species plant. I wish I could post a picture, but my camera is on the fritz.
