Over-wintered geraniums have mold

| I have potted up alot of over-wintered geramiuns. Some have new leaves and green stems. A few have grey mold at the base of the plant. They have been in my back room, west sunlight for a week. Today I moved them outside to my unheated greenhouse. Is the mold bad or will the fresh air and light kill it? My potting soil was maybe a little too wet when I potted them up, but has dried out some these last couple days.
I also have alot of my winter sowing sprouts in greenhouse, so if this mold is something that will spread, please let me know asap. Thanks alot to all.

Hi April, It is better to prevent mould and fungal infections rather than try to cure them. Unless the the infected plants are of particular value I would discard them rather than risk the infection spreading to other plants. If the plants are particularly valuable I would still remove them to a separate room, cut off all visibly infected tissue then treat ALL the plants with a systemic fungicide such as Dithane 945. Geraniums (Pelargoniums) are best grown in dry well drained soil/compost in a dry atmosphere, they do not like humid conditions. Good Luck Ron |
