Hardy Geranium Question: sun/soil

HI.
I have just placed an order from one of the recommended websites posted here in the forum. I love geraniums and I seems to be addicited right now.
But I have a question, what is the best soil, and if geraniums are supposed to be for "shade" than why are most shown in sun? I have dapppeled sun and want to get the most of some of the colors that I ordered, like espresso I want to show the brown, nad Elizabeth Anne, to show her colors.
What is the best choice for sun and soil?
Any advice would be appreciated.
Laura

RE: Hardy Geranium Question: sun/soil

G. maculatum & G. phaeum are shade lovers and will definitely do better in the shade. I have a G. phaeum var. lividem that lost its shade when the apple tree it was under succumbed to fire blight that is doing alright but requires a lot of watering to keep it in shape. Pratense means meadow and likes full sun. G. cinereum is not hardy here so I can't comment on it. As for soil, none of them seem to be too particular but I would keep the soil for the G. pratense lean as it becomes floppy and untidy when it grown too fast.
