interesting bloom structure

I am familiar with Geraniums, but not an expert by any means. I have a rather large Geranium that is currently covered in bloom stalks. One (and only one) of the blooms stalks has an interesting feature. There is a green stem(?) sticking out of the center of each bloom. Does anyone know what these are?

I thought maybe it had something to do with these blooms being pollinated, but the plant is indoors.
