Starting G. phaeum from cuttings

Has anyone been able to start G. phaeum form cuttings? I had a lovely G. phaeum var. lividum which didn't come back up last summer. It is lovely and no longer available in Canada that I can find so I would hate to lose it. I found a seedling of it growing between two stalks of a Martagon lily and impossible to move. I have seen several references to using cuttings to propagate hardy geraniums but no instructions. Any help would be appreciated.

I started a phaeum cutting in water last year by accident.
The plant was wintering indoors and flowered. I cut a stem and put in a jar of water so the rest of the buds would open.
A few weeks later this is what happened.

Thanks, It looks like is worth a try. This is the fun time of year for hardy geraniums with seedlings coming up in the least expected places. I had seedling of G. sylvaticum for the first time growing right by the walk were we can enjoy it.
