What's up with my Geranium?

I was given a geranium about 2 years ago. My mother had it for about 10-15 years. It was taken from a cutting of a geranium that was very old.

Now here's my problem/question. This particular geranium is not like any that I've ever seen. The leaves are small (quarter to half dollar size). They are thick and light green with heavy veins, kind of waxy like a begonia leaf. The stems are very woody. The pure red flowers grow in clusters but they are small, slightly larger than Lantana. It's nearly impossible to kill.

Is this maybe just an old variety or could it's characteristics be from years of cutting off of an inferior plant? Either way this plant means alot to me and I'll keep it. I'm just curious.
