Advice on taking cuttings of Pelagornium?

Hi,

I have a Pelargonium that I bought at Logee's over the winter. It was the last one of the variety I wanted but it had a long woody stem and then regrowth coming from that. It is pretty ugly and I am pretty sure I can't just cut it back all the way into the woody part. So I thought I would be better off just taking cuttings of the growing tips. I think I have some rooting hormone around here somewhere. Just feeling a little rusty on how to proceed. Any suggestions for success would be lovely. :-)

Thanks!

Some people say to leave the cuttings overnight to harden on the end before rooting them, but from my experience it's not necessary and only puts undue stress on the cutting. Most varieties of pelargoniums will readily root either way with or without rooting hormone. I don't know how everyone else does it, but I take cuttings and remove the bottom set of leaves and any flower buds, stick them in damp peat moss and put them in a sunny window. I keep the peat moist by giving them a little bit of water every other day, but not getting them soggy and in about 2 - 3 weeks they take root. I grow them year round indoors and have never lost a scented geranium cutting by doing it this way. Good luck with your propagation!

Thanks very much treefarmer. You make it sound very easy! I will give it a try and let you know how I do.

I grow scenteds too and root them the same way treefarmer does except I start them under lights.

Thanks mayflyon :-) I don't have a light set up in my house, but I might try that on a sunny windowsill next spring before the season gets going, so they will be ready to go.

Great idea!
