Deadheading Geraniums ~ Help please?

I'm new to growing geraniums. When you deadhead them, the top part is finished but underneath is new red buds. Do you just cut off the top part that is finished and leave the buds underneath or do you remove the entire stalk with the new buds underneath as well.

You have to decide whether you are going to let all the buds open and put up with a few dead ones on top or cut your losses and dead head when there are still unopened buds. You do not cut the flower heads off. That will leave you with a flower stalk which will die and drop off anyway. You can gently snap the whole flower stalk off with your fingers at the base.
