Did I just ruin my geranium for the summer?

I have a *huge* hardy geranium (cranesbill?) that gets enormous in my garden and then promptly sprawls all over - light purple blooms. I just love it but it was literally smothering some other plants that I have. It had blooms all over it but I figured if I chopped it by about half, it should rebloom again. Although I have a beautiful, full vase of flowers in the house, I think that maybe this was a bad idea. Did I just eliminate the blooming period for this plant entirely or will it continue to bloom? It's now about 9 inches tall. I've read if you shear it to the ground AFTER blooming, you'll get a nice foliage mound and it might rebloom a little bit. I thought maybe by doing it halfway, I'd have a "mum" affect/effect (can never remember which it is LOL).

Any thoughts on this? I'm sad...I think I just ruined the beautiful display for this year in a cutting spazz. :(
