shear rain-flattened Biokovo blooms?

Two consecutive nights of all out rain 2 weeks ago flattened my Biokovo blooms to the ground--but they are still blooming! It's only their second year but they had become quite large and tall. Now the leaves are beginning to stand up straighter or are sending up new leaves. But the flower stems are still practically horizontal. There are plenty of unopened buds on the stems though.
Should I cut off all the blooms and hope that the next batch comes in perpindicular? Or should I just live with it until they stop blooming and then shear them off for the new crop to come in?
And when I cut them down, it should be around July, yes? And should I cut off just the stems or the foliage as well?

RE: shear rain-flattened Biokovo blooms?

Kirsten,

Biokovo generally does not rebloom, at least not for me. If you cut the flowering stems off, you probably will lose all flowers for this season. You can try cutting off the muddy opened flowers, and gently pull the flowering stems upright, threading them through leaves for support (I hope this makes sense), or even using a few small twigs for them to lean on to keep them semi-upright.

My Biokovo geraniums go through hail, heavy rain, etc., and never seem to flop as the flowering stems only get a few inches high. I am wondering if you bought an overfed plant (can result in tall, lanky, weak growth), are over-feeding your own plants (ditto). If those things are not factors, it sounds like you've had some really bad geranium weather.

Biokovo doesn't set seed for me, the flowering stems, once blooms are over, just dry up and disappear, so I don't cut it back at all.

Good luck, I hope you can salvage some blooms.

Kate
