Confused about geraniums/ways to propogate.

I am a newbie and confused about something. When did geramiuns become perennials?? I noticed a sign labed geraniums in the perennial section of the nursery today--when did this happen? Also, I have a Robert's lemon rose geramiun and a peppermint geramiun that I would love to keep until next year (but no room inside to keep it) Is there anything I can do to keep it for next year (ie cuttings, drying the root)? Thanks for the help! Dana

RE: Confused about geraniums/ways to propogate.

The first step is to distinguish between Geraniums and Pelargoniums. Read The FAQ.

Next, you will find it obvious that most Geraniums are hardy perennials, although there are a few tender species and a few very short-lived species.

Then, you will find that Pelargoniums are tender perennials, killed by freezing conditions, so that many people grow them as bedding annuals. In frost-free conditions they will live for decades, so you can grow them as houseplants, in a frost-free greenhouse, or bring them indoors for the winter.
