Flower buds drying out and falling

| My Pelargoniums are not flowering at all for a while... When I took a close look, all the flower buds initially form up but they soon dry out and fall. What can be causing this and how I fix it? Any info would be apprecaited.

| Boy, I sure wish I had some help to offer you on this. By now the problem has probably resolved itself. How have the plants been doing? Are they worse, better? |

| It's doing SOMEWHAT better than before. It flowered a couple but I'm still trying to figure out what's the cause... Anyhow, the winter's just around the corner and I don't think I have much time to figure this out. I was suspecting the root rot since it's been constantly raining here and the soil never had any chance to dry out. Well, we'll see next year! Thank you for your concern. Nic |

| Aqua, so we are to take for granted then that you are over-wintering your geraniums and the present plants are going to make a re-appearance next spring. Your problem has bits of what could be a light problem. Does your plants receive good full sun and even if it does get rained on, good drainage should not interfere with it getting over-watered. Slow production of bloom might suggest too you are feeding your plants not the right kind of food. A fertilizer with a higher middle number to help the plant produce bloom is recommended. Miracle Gro is one specified for most plants. A couple tablespoons of superphosphate (0/26/0) mixed into the soil around the roots might push it to produce better. A feeding of something that would be better put on a lawn---with a high nitrogen value might be cause enough to deny bloom....but give you increased foliage. Perhaps, you have mixed with the potting soil (I assume you did use potting soil) some enriched compost. Compost is noted for having a high nitrogen value. It should always be mixed with the present soil wherever it is used....including the bedding plants. |

| I indeed mixed soil with the compost. They are hung out on my balcony rails and get the full sun pretty much all day. I got what I could get for the perterlizer which is a general perterlizer for the geraniums here. Couldn't find any numbers... This is my first time that I'm raising any plants outdoor what so ever and I didn't know any better than just planting them and perterlizing them but there's no drainiage at the bottom of the pot. That's why I suspected over watering... I'm trying to figure out what would be the best way to preserve them through the winter so wish me luck. Thank you very much for your information... Nic |

Nic, two methods of overwintering: 1. Bring them in to enjoy as houseplants. 2. Take all the dirt off the roots, hang them upside down in a cool dark spot, and ignore them. The in early spring pot them back up and they will resume growth. Diane has great success with this method, so she can give you tips on this one. This might be answered in the FaQs. I do the bring them in as houseplants method. I haven't had success at this house (have at other locations,) with the dormancy method, so I just grow them all winter in a partially heated sunroom. Someday I'm going to try the dormancy method again. Good luck. :-) |

| I wish I had option to bring them all in but I have too many of them to bring them all in. I'll see what happens after I store them in Garage like all others do here... Nic |

| Now I think I know what caused the leaf/flowers to dry out and fall. It was the result of too much rain indeed. I noticed everytime my geraniums get rained a lot, the water melts the flowers and leaves. Nic |

I have similar problem with my oleander, which I planted out about three years ago. It never picked up, but with a bit more attention it is now about 4.5 ft tall and the foliage is healthy looking, and although in previous years there were few buds which never opened, dried and fell off, this year there were many buds and I was looking forward to a good display. However, a few flowers did open up and more seemed ready to do so, but now I find that most of the buds have again dropped off, and we're coming to the end of summer. I wasn't sure when and how much to water, and quite the right fertiliser to use. There doesn't seem much information about oleanders, so can anyone please help. Many thanks. Renata |
