really tall Pelargonium zonale-hybrid: which cultivars?

Posted by linaria 7 (My Page) on

Hello there,
next season I would love to grow a really tall Pelargonium-zonale type. I made an half-hearted attempt this season buying one recommended in a local nursery, but it had far too less vigor. I heard that some oldfashioned types would cover whole walls in British conservatorys.

I would prefer either a clear pink or dark red as a colour of flowers, but height is most important. The cultivar should grow 2 or three feet in a season, best conditions provided. Well, I appreciate your suggestions, thanks a lot,

cheers, Lin

Lin:

I think the only ones like that, that exist anymore are grown for their leaves and have small insignificant flowers. Maybe that's what the ones you read about looked like too.

The hybrids we grow today have been bred to have beautiful flowers and a compact growth habit

I sell a lot of the older type zonal but the tallest I grow and is common at many garden centers is a red called Yours Truly. Another tall red is Redcoat propagated by Bartlets co. Rocky Mountain red and pink from Fischer co. are also tall zonal. You will need to stake them but I have never seen any of them grow taller then 4ft.They get very top heavy from massive blossoms and the plants easily break a part which is why so many new varieties are compact. There is a very tall trellis type of zonal I have seen in the past that used to be sold by the now defunct Olgvee company that you might want to look into ... Bob.

Oglevee was purchased by Ecke, but is still very much alive and well. They have two or three varieties that they sell that are called Pillar Geraniums and I think are the trellis type that Sunnfarm is referring to. You cannot purchase from them on a retail basis, but they maybe able to direct you to a retailer in your area. Go to ecke.com and you will see Oglevee information on the front page.
