bright blue geranium

I saw a geranium at my local botanic garden about two weeks ago. It was a knockout: electric blue, bluer than Johnson's blue, the flower a little bigger, with more of a white center. It had a pretty prostrate, more creeping habit than the mounding one my Johnson's Blue has.
They used it a lot in one area, but I hunted and hunted and could not find a tag. This was in full bloom in mid -october; which I thought was really unusual. My geranium sanguineum has a couple of sporadic blooms this late, but this was a lot of bloom.

Any idea what this could be?

most likely 'Rozanne' aka 'Jolly Bee'

I'd agree most likely Rozanne - it has an extremely long bloom time and a definitely sprawling habit (Jolly Bee is more upright). It also has a much wider availability here in the states compared to Jolly Bee and tends to have a more definitive white eye.

FWIW, 'Rozanne' and 'Jolly Bee' are NOT the same plant. Parentage is similar but not identical, they are propagated and licensed under two separate patents, leaf shape and patterning is not the same and their flowering is similar but also not identical.

I've head mentions of Rozanne here before and on the perennial forum, but never knew what it looked like before. I just googled the name Rozanne. That must be it. Though not all of the pictures had the white eye I recall so prominently. Now I know why so many people were talking about it!

In non-Botanic garden settings, will it really bloom into October? Zone 5. I can use a low-grower like this too. I assume since I already have Johnson's Blue and the magenta sanguinuem that Rozanne would be happy in my garden too.

I think this is the first thing on my "must buy" list for next year. Thanks!

Linnea, how long it blooms will depend on local conditions, but an established plant in decent soil will easily bloom until cut back by a hard frost. In my area, it will take several mild frosts without problems. New flowers tend to have a very distinct white eye, while older flowers fade to a more uniform color.

There is a good reason this geranium is so popular - it is a real flowering powerhouse with an appealing habit and little need for shearing back during the season.

I was just out in my garden cleaning up today and Rozanne still had a few blooms.

plants get 'stolen' all the time. Cornus with their bright stems have all been relaunched by the Dutch under new names. There was a big case during 2004 and 2005 over the rights to Osteospermums. Recently a micropropped hardy Geranium flooded the market before the rightful owner could launch it. Searching the 'net just now it is still available under both names. The same as 'Rozanne' and 'Jolly Bee'. I have both growing side by side and there is no differene. If I knew how to post photos here I would

Here is a link that might be useful: stolen Osteospermums
