Source for Sinningia (florists' "Gloxinia")?

Posted by bill_ri_z6b (My Page) on

I used to see these plants everywhere for sale years ago. Mostly with the big, velvety red or blue flowers, often with the scalloped border in white. But I haven't seen them in ages. Does anyone know of a source for these plants? I live in Rhode Island, so a nearby source would be nice, but mail order from anywhere would be second best and certainly a possibility. Suggestions are welcome.

Bill - every so often I see finished plants in good nurseries. has an interesting selection of named Sinningia speciosa - probably young plants.

If you do search on on gloxinia seeds - they will come with several options. With good luck the young pants will be blooming in 9 months - and you will have bunch of different ones.

The way how to start seeds - you need to spread them on a top of soil - do not cover with soil - in the transparent salad container - and keep covered, barely moist and under light. The soil - you can use crumbled jiffy pellets. When they are safe to handle - you transplant to small pots - and transplant to bigger pots later.

Good Luck
