Episcia in Landscape

While taking a walk at lunch today I saw a planting of Episcias in a large container that also held a palm. I was a a bit surprized and very pleased. They probably get a bit more sun than is optimal but are basicaly in good shape and blooming up a storm.

Living in this city one often sees plants growing in flower beds or balconies that just don't cut it in more temperate zones.

Hi
That must be fantastic !!! I can grow them outdoors during the long summer but have to take cuttings over winter. I find most tropicals can take temps down to frost
in stride but not episcia. They curl at 50 40 being fatal.
Would assume Medillin must be "lowland " tropical.
Colombia has a mind boggling amount of grow zones due to the mountains. Seems that I read that there are somewhere around 60,000 native species!! Wow what a garden you could build!!! gary

Gary:

Medellin has what is considered to be an 'intermediate" climate by orchid growers. We get 80-85F days and nights around 60F. The elevation here is around 1500-1600 feet. it's a big city that extend up a long valley and has development quite a ways up the surrounding mountians.

The diversity here is amazing compared to the temeperate zones. It has however been significantly reduced due to conversion ag lands, timber crops and pasture, not to mention urban development around Medellin.

I'm always on the look out for useful natives. They can still be found and some are very nice.

The elevation in feet here is about 6000 feet. I was thinking in meters! I'm getting used to the metric system and sometimes I forget to convert.
