Need Pumpkin/Watermelon Seed Advice

Posted by glorybee 7 (My Page) on

I am looking to try growing a few large pumpkins and watermelons this year. There is a spot of land in the back of our property that gets alot of rain runoff from the horse farm behind us so I was thinking this would be a great place to plant them along the edge of where our yard normally floods a tad.We grew sugar baby melons last year and hubby wants a larger variety this year so I thought it would be fun to slip a seedling or two of a giant watermelon in the garden this year.Which brings me to my question :).Which matters more.Soil or seed genetics.Because I am looking online at seed sources and seeing seeds for 10 to 15.00 a dozen. If you make a decent soil patch and order carolina cross seeds or dills atlantic giant that are non specific of what their parents weighed do you still have a decent chance of growing a large vegetable or fruit ?

Thanks

You get what you pay for. If you need seeds email me for my address. I will hook you up. Store bought will give you nice pumpkins.. But you wouldn't try racing a Saturn in a Nascar Race. Shannon

I am not trying to tell you what to do but watermelons like it alittle on the dry side. They dont like there feet wet. If it get very wet you will have fungas problems and may even loose your plants. I grow about 8 acers a year on plastic. For a good tasting red melon that is about 25 pounds try the Patroit melon. A good orange melon of about22 pounds is the Gold Strike. Also the orange-glo melon will get 50 pounds easily put the rind is very thin.

I'm not sure that Carolina Cross, which is the variety they grow for weight records, is the greatest tasting, so you may be disappointed.

Try Black Diamond Yellow Flesh. You can get a 20+ pound melon that will be fantastic.

I'd take Shannon's advice. Also learn how how to manage the vines and the pumpkins for big ones.

Maybe you could make a mini hill in the middle of the runoff area where you want to plant them. Then you can have a raised bed effect.

Sounds like good fertilizer too! Just be careful that your not getting runoff from fresh (green)poop. It may make the runoff water to acidic.
