Any tips on selecting seed to save? Giant Sunflowers

I grew some Mammoth Grey Stripe this year. None of them reached over about 8'. I'm wondering if it would be worth saving seed from any of them. Would I want to select the first to open, Widest head, Widest stalk - least drooping.

The 2 w/ the widest head are also the ones drooping the most. I had tripods nearby for toms and pole beans and used these to support them. The biggest was drooping almost to the ground, it's tied back to the fence and is almost completely upright w/ some help.

I'd like to grow bigger next year, maybe none of these are worth saving seed from at all. What do you guys think?

rj,

I grew Diane's Strain Mammoth Sunflowers this year and they were great. Three out of four seeds that I planted grew, with the largest head measuring 24"; that's allot of seeds! It's a hybrid sunflower so I doubt if the seeds would produce the same plant next year.

Some friends planted the Mammoth Grey Stripe for me and while the size of the flower is respectable, I think I will just roast the seeds and enjoy them.

I am really excited about the Diane's strain of sunflower and will probably order some more seeds for planting.
