I am going to grow my first giant pumpkin next year.I would like to know how deep should I dig the soil?I am starting with red clay.On TV a fellow said he starts his seeds in a 6'deep hole, that has soil and compost.I would hate to think I would need a 6' hole.

RE: How Deep

If you want the biggest pumpkin you can grow you will want to get them started early indoors. A good date to shoot for starting your seeds is your birthday or around the last week of April. You will then want them outdoors and in the patch within the following 10 days. The pumpkins are then covered with a simple hoop house to keep them from being damaged by frost. Good reasons for getting them in so early are a longer season and AG's are more difficult to pollenate during the heat of July, so you want females on in late June to early July.
You certainly don't need to go that deep but it does pay to have as much loose soil for you roots to go as deep as possible.
The key ingredients for growing a Giant are Genetics, soil prep "LOTS of compost", work, and a little luck.
You can find a complete tutorial at the link provided.
Free seeds will also be made available for the price of a self addressed stamped envelope.
GOOD LUCK!!!!!
