Harvested my Carolina Cross watermelon

| just today. I have a newfound respect for the people who grow the prize-winners. Mine measured 21 inches long, 43 inches circumference, but "only" 62.8 pounds. Damn. I was shooting for 100 pounds.
So, someone growing a 262 pound watermelon, the world record, beat me by 200 pounds. Simply amazing. My hat goes off to them.
There's always next year ! |

You must not have seen the news the brights of AR just set a new watermelon record of 268. But considering their track record of the first 200 lb melon and the record of 260 several years ago. There is no doubt that it is genuine. |

| Thanks Douglas. I'm pretty happy with it. We cut it up at a Rotary club party this past weekend. It was extremely impressive to people, but perhaps a little underripe. Still edible though. I'm debating saving seeds because it was cross-pollenated with other melons probably, but you never know. Next year I may grow 2 or three plants in a different area, away from my other watermelons. Not sure. It was a good watermelon year overall. Looking forward to harvesting the AG pumpkin. I'm pretty sure that it's stopped growing and the plant is in decline. But it's not dead yet. Probably harvest later this month. How is yours doing ? I need to sync up with you on AG seeds for next year. Maybe I can get ahold of some good watermelon seeds and trade you.... |
