My dad entered his Atlantic Giant pumpkins into a contest this year and loved every minute of it. His pumpkins came in around 250 pounds, so he's still perfecting the craft!
My sisters and I would like to give him a Christmas gift that will help him in his quest. We thought about soil heating cables -- so he can plant the pumpkins earlier. We considered ordering special corners so he can build a raised bed. Or perhaps some kind of shade structure (he usually strings up shade cloth).
Dad doesn't have a lot of money to spend on this hobby, so he's unlikely to buy any of this stuff himself. He might build a raised bed, but he would probably just use his staple gun to hold the corners together.
What is the most effective thing we can give him to help him grow a big one next year? (I know -- manure is the best thing -- but if you think we're willing to give our dad a load of crap for Christmas, think again!)
Does he have the How To Grow World Class Giant Pumpkins Trilogy. I have read mine over and over again. Otherwise I would try to get him some Organic Fertilizers. A load of crap delivered and spread is one of those things we dream of. So it would not be that bad of a present. 1st year get him some cow manure, then second year get some horse or other animal. That way he cant say you get him the same crap every year:) Shannon
Thanks Shannon! He does own the books. But you're right about the load of crap -- it might not be such a bad idea after all! Maybe we could purchase some plastic "poop" to wrap up with the gift certificate. It could be fun! I'll have to run that by my sisters.
Hi all, I come from United Kingdom and interested in learning a few of your secrets to grow monster pumpkins (my future goal). I think you have some great gift ideas.I felt a little nervous about joining the forum, so I hope new members are welcome.
Jason there are several growers that I consider friends growing in the UK. Not to detract you from this website. BigPumpkins.Com UK even has there own site I believe.
