Growing Watermelons

Im getting a truckload of horse manure. I plan to age it, and compost it. Im not going to mix it with anything else. Im going to grow watermelons this year. I want a great mix for watermelons. I also have a huge compost pile,consisting of leaves,coffee grounds,lawn clippings and all kinds of other organic food wastes. I was just wondering which one would be better for growing watermelons. I know they like nitrogen but in small ammounts. thanks

I grow mine in 10 year old horse manure mixed with wood shavings that has been well composted (we turn the giant piles a few times a year with the tractor and we spred it out.) We dug up the area we use with our backhoe, rototilled the ground really well, put the manure/shavings on and rototilled that and that is what I grow mine in. I do not fetilize them at all. I had two 70# last year with most averaging 25-40 lbs and I have a short season here in N. Wyoming.

Thats cool. thanks for the tips.So am I on the right track then. If I let this stuff sit ouside to compost until planting season it should be ok to use right. Should I also incorporate a bit of compost into it as well. thanks,brandon
