Zingiber 'Midnight'

My Zingiber 'Midnight' bloomed this year. Pictures I'd seen on the web don't do it justice-- heads come out golden yellow and then turn bubblegum pink, really eye-catching with the black foliage! (Hey Tim, what's the species of this one?)

Upon doing a web search, this appears to be Z. malaysianum.

I have one that bloomed last year, beautiful!!! I thought I had lost it over winter but it is making a slow comeback. Also, the leaves in the right light are translucence(sp) that are a beauty. Can anybody in zone 8 give me a tip on growing the Midnight?

Wow, that is an outstanding trio of colors!! I had Z. mioga bloom for the first time this year and it is nothing compared to that! Next time I see Midnight I may have to bring it home!

I had the opportunity to introduce 'Midnight Ginger from Johor although we could have been in Pahang,Malaysia growing as an understory herb. I gave it to AgriStarts to tissue culture because of its obvious horticultural value It was only after it emerged from tissue culture that it was identified and named Z.malaysiana. It does suffer in temperatures below 50 with a yellowing of the leaves.I haven't set any seed on it yet. it makes a nice contrast with the silver leaves of Elettariopsis.
