You've got a Heliconia Psittacorum. It's either Andromeda or Choconiana. I can't determine which one it is from the picture. If the bloom is solid orange, then its Choconiana. If the bloom has some red on the outer parts, then its Andromeda. Anyway, the Psittacorums are not easy to overwinter. The big box stores here in Louisiana sell them during the summer. This variety of heliconia will bloom in 3 to 5 months from rhizome. Most other heliconia bloom on second year growth. They are finicky. They don't like temps below 50. You should only water once a week. No fertilizer. As much sun as you can give it. If your outside temps moderate during the winter; ie, night time temps above 50 for a few days, haul them outside and give them a taste of the outdoors. I see that you posted this back in Sept. Let me know what they look like now. I've killed a bunch of these varieties of heliconia.
Wow- forgot all about this message - this plant is doing pretty good. When it starts to sag a little, I water it. And it is still sending up new shoots. Looks like it will hold on until I can put back out on my deck. Thanks for the reply
The only way to kill a heliconia is over water it. If you have it inside place it somewhere to keep the tepms around 65-70 and trim them back so they will grow new sprouts they will be fine till it warms up
