Propatating Red Ginger

It is January here in Hawaii. My red ginger plants have mature looking air clusters (looks like other air plants such as spider plants). I would like to take some cuttings and start new plants.

Do I cut them as I would a spider plant and root them in water?

Would they prefer to root into ground?

Do I need to attach a soil packet to them and let them root priot to the cutting?

Please advise.

They will not be able to root naturally as the location is landscaped with volcanic rock and it is unlikely they will be able to bend over and push roots through this material.

Thanks for your help!

Sheila

RE: Propatating Red Ginger

Hi Sheila-
Really, any of the options you mentioned will work. They root pretty easily. We have cut them and rooted them in a shallow dish of water very easily. They will also root in dirt, cut or still attached to the plant, but I think it takes a bit longer. I would not worry about a soil packet- too much work. I would just wait until the babies are about 4-5 inches tall.- Have fun- Gwenn

I usually just clip them off and stick them into the dirt.
