Which ginger? Need advice

Posted by AnnaFL z10a FL (My Page) on

I am looking for a ginger to plant between crinums and brazilian red cloak bushes. They would need to stay at about 3-5 feet, clump in a rather full style and have beautiful foliage year round (zone 10a). Colored foliage would be most desirable (red on the back?). Flowers would be a plus, but not necessary. What should I consider? I am tired of the alpinia zerumbet that is common in our area. Need something eyecatching. Thank-you!

There is Zingiber 'Midnight' and zingiber vinosum that have colorful foliage and stay under 5 ft. And it is evergreen.
Two others:

Here is a link that might be useful: zingiber 'Midnight'

If you are wanting that kind of colorful leaf I would say dirch gingers and plant Ti leaves.

The zingiber vinosum looks great, but is it something that will thrive in the Sarasota area planted in the ground? The conditions are medium shade, average moisture.

Bihai, ti have such incredible foliage, but I'm thinking they won't form thick clumps that I'd like in that spot. I would have to buy so many. Thanks, all.
