I've been trying to find what was called Hedychium peppermint at a garden center in Santa Barbara a few years ago. It had awesome red and white blooms on the same flower. It kind of looked like a checker board with white and red squares.
Can you point me in the right direction to finding this one again. I also have alot of tropical plants to trade if interested(check trade my trade page).
Thanks,
Kyle |

It is most likely Alpinia japonica 'Kinisiana' "Peppermint Stick". I will be mailing your plants Tuesday! |

Sounds good..looking forward to those huge Xantho leaves! I looked up A.j.Kinisiana, but I will never forget the bloom. It was the classic Hedychium sized/shape flower head with each seperate little flower being either pure white or red......maybe time to do some more google searching. |

| WOW, that would be some Hedychium! If you find out anymore info, and perhaps even a source, please let us know! I have had the Alpinia Bihai mentions in my garden since 7/25/99. Every winter since it was planted, has been just cold enough to kill off that summer's growth(meaning no flowers the next year) This winter, to this point, has not been cold enough to do that, so MAYBE for the first time I will see it bloom! I am very excited about the possibility!! |

| I just got the alpinia japonica "Peppermint Stck" in a trade. Do you know what it's sun/shade requirements are, and it's water needs? It's difficult to find info on this plant. Thanks. Steve. |

| Hi Steve, It's a shade lover. Rated hardy to zone 7b; one of the hardiest alpinias. I've been growing it for 7 years and has bloomed every year since planting. I don't do a thing to it; no water, no fertilizer, it's on its own. Mine is planted under an oak tree canopy and it never gets any frost but it does regularly get in the 20's a couple times each winter and shows no leaf damage. The bloom is rather smallish and insignificant but nice. Steve |

| It's supposed to be kept moist. I have it planted near cannas, so it'll get it's share of water, and be in shade. Steve |
