What type of ginger are you calling common ginger. Do you know the scientific name.

I do not know the scientific name for it. I bought the root form the grocery store.

Then it's Zingiber Officianale. Grows 3 to 5 feet. Blooms basally and terminally. Some stalks tend to lean over. You can stake them up if that look is more pleasing to you but it isn't a requirement.

What does basally and terminally mean? I tried to google it but I had no luck finding the meaning. Thank you for the info and the proper term of my plant.

A basal bloom comes from the ground (base) and a terminal bloom appears at the top of the stalk. Once a stalk blooms at the top, it dies (terminates). Most gingers bloom on the stalk; a lesser number bloom at the soil level, a very few bloom both ways.
