| I've never grown ginger before. I live in Atlanta and would like suggestions on tall and variegated types for a shady border area.
Is it winter hardy here? Thanks for any advice on good types for beginners. |

| Zingerber mioga 'Dancing Crane' is a variegated ginger that has been hardy for me. It is also called Japanese woodland ginger. It is about 2 ft tall. Hedychium 'Dr Moy' has white streaks in the leaves and a beautiful peach colored bloom. It is 6-7 ft in perfect condictions. Alpinia formosana is 6ft and variegated shaded stripes of green to yellow. Alpinia zerumbert 'Yu Hwa' is green striped variegated and 7ft at maximum. All this will do well in part shade with some morning light. They need lots of fertilizer and water. Hedychium coronarium white butterfly ginger is very vigorus and hardy. It prefers full sun but will work in light shade but you may have to stake it. It gets 7 plus ft tall. Here is a photo of Hedychium 'Dr Moy' in my greenhouse but I also have it planted outside. Alpinia 'Yu Hwa' is in the far right side above the heater. Shades of green. ![]() |
