looking for the earliest hedychium

| I have a pot of white butterfly ginger that will not bloom. Are there cultivars that might bloom earlier, or not need so much heat?

For me my Hedychium hybrid 'Daniel Weeks' blooms before any other variety of Hedychium that I grow (over 40 varieties). What is your winter care? When do new shoots emerge in spring? My coronarium starts blooming sometimes around the end of June (depending on evening temps.) and my Daniel weeks start about 3 to 4 weeks sooner. Hope this helped. Liz |

| Of course the timing of a particular plant will be different for you than for someone in another state. It could also vary if grown in a container versus one in the ground. I can tell you my earliest Hedychium is an unknown I received as part of an order from Stokes Tropicals. I ordered H. spicatum 'White Wings' and they sent me one that I feel sure is partly(if not entirely) H. coccineum. It has narrow foliage and dark orange, non fragrant flowers. It usually begins blooming for me in late June(first flowers last year opened June 30). I also have Daniel Weeks. My unknown is usually done blooming before DW starts. Last year, my DW began blooming on August 4. |

| I can't leave my gingers in the ground so I have the white butterfly in a pot, in an unheated room for the winter - it's crowded but no blooms ever. I think I will put some in the garden and as well as the pot - with row cover and walls of water for an early start. I was also thinking of trying Tara from Brent and Becky's bulbs because they said it would bloom in cool summers. Thanks birdlady and gaalan - I will also keep my eyes open for DW. Gaalan, maybe you should let Stokes know about the early bloomer - try to identify it or propagate it - it might be a real boon for us northern gardeners. Lisa |
