Piggly Wiggly Ginger?

Posted by noodeler 8a (My Page) on

Could anyone tell me what kind of ginger is sold in grocery stores? I bought a few roots at the local "pig" and was thinking about sticking them in pots, in my greenhouse. What can I expect? will they grow?

Can anyone reccomend a particular type of ginger that is best to cook with?

I know these are rookie questions. Thanks.

RE: Piggly Wiggly Ginger?

The type you got at the store is Zingiber officianale and is the best edible type commonly found. Yes it will grow. It makes a smallish plant, 3-4 ft tall, with basal small pinecone inflos. Root hardy in zone 8
