I really love ginger and am wondering if it can grow in Texas (Dallas) and withstand the freezing weather we get.

YOu can probably grow hedychiums but they will go dormant in winter

I grow hedychiums in zone 8a and they die back to ground and come back every spring. We get down to about 12 degrees in the winter.

I am in Arlington and I grow hedychium, curcuma, and costus. They should do fine for you!

The Hedychiums are overall the hardiest genus of gingers for areas like yours and mine.

There are scattered individual species in other genera that can be very hardy too. I have had Alpinia japonica foliage survive temps below 20F unharmed. I do need to mention one fact about most Alpinias however. For the most part they bloom on second year growth, so getting one to bloom in the ground in my area is nigh impossible.

Zingiber mioga is another very hardy ginger. These plants are neat in that their flowers come from ground level instead of at the end of a leafy stem!

Do some experimentation, you might soon find your entire property covered with gingers!

Here is a picture of my Alpinia japonica after a low of 16F this December.

Here is a link that might be useful: Alpinia
