| The Hedychiums are overall the hardiest genus of gingers for areas like yours and mine. There are scattered individual species in other genera that can be very hardy too. I have had Alpinia japonica foliage survive temps below 20F unharmed. I do need to mention one fact about most Alpinias however. For the most part they bloom on second year growth, so getting one to bloom in the ground in my area is nigh impossible. Zingiber mioga is another very hardy ginger. These plants are neat in that their flowers come from ground level instead of at the end of a leafy stem! Do some experimentation, you might soon find your entire property covered with gingers!
