Im from Holland and I do have a collection from over the 100 species gingers...there are cold hardy species.... hedychium ,Zingiber, costus, species...and roscoea species are also cold hardy. I do dig them up (al the species but not the roscoea's i leave them in the ground) and put them in early spring in pots and plant them in my garden when there is no frost. I dig them up because i want to see them flower...gingers do flower late. Here in holland spring is to cold and they will not grow that fast.

Did you say Hedychium will grow in cold zones?? New to Ginger and don't know where to start. The ones I really love are tropical and probably wouldn't do well here. Wondered about the Pink Siam Curcuma and Alpinia. They're All so beautiful.
If I have no luck, I may just switch to Cannas!!!

I'm growing culinary ginger outdoors right now in zone 6
its over a foot tall and i started it just by planting a rhizome i bought from my local supermarket
i guess i'll bring it in when fall/winter hits
i dont really know yet ;)
