Organic Soil Advice

Posted by jgore Philadelphia, PA (My Page) on

I recently received a red and white ginger from a friend as a gift, as I think many of the people who posted on this forum. Just wondering what kind of soil I can use that's not miracle-grow, since I usually stay away from chemical fertilizers, if possible. It's not completely necessary, but I was just wondering basically if any potting soil will do.

Has anyone tried amending their soil with compost, or is this the wrong nutrient base for ginger?

RE: Organic Soil Advice

I think a very organic soil would be wonderful. composted etc. Gingers can tolerate some bad soil but if you want them to be lush and bloom well then the better the soil the better and healthier the plant which should lead to bigger fuller blooms.organic fertilizers such as bone meal, blood meal etc are great. I often use soil from my chicken pen, very high nitrogen so must be used carefully, I burnt up a bunch of cosmos this year by using to much at one time. They got five feet tall and bloomed pitifully then died.
