Thanks,

Plove, apparently you can ... at least certain types. I saw some in the shade perennial section at the Rutgers Gardens Spring Plant Sale this past weekend; I don't remember the variety, but pretty leaves with a silvery overlay. I was sorely tempted, but had already gone over my budget so maybe next year.

No doubt you'll get some good advice here, but if not, try a google search ... or, if you're close enough, maybe a trip to the Rutgers Gardens to see what they have and ask about their culture?

I have a plant of Zingiber mioga in shade for its third year now and has done well. I haven't gotten any fall flowers yet though. Tropical varieties also do very well outside in the summer and then either treat as an annual or bring the plant inside for the winter.
